I had a lot of exposure in the US Navy and college to Iranians, and I liked them. They seemed different than other middle eastern people I had met. (I know, they aren’t arabic, they are Persian!)
They seemed to collectively have a great sense of humor, and seemed normal to me.
That all changed when the Shah went down.
