Newt Gingrich on Monday offered rare, scalding criticism of President Trump, demanding that the president explain the comments he made during his controversial press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the conclusion of their talks in Helsinki.
"President Trump must clarify his statements in Helsinki on our intelligence system and Putin," the former House speaker wrote on Twitter. "It is the most serious mistake of his presidency and must be corrected-immediately."
Trump received widespread scorn on Monday after he said at the media availability that he has yet to see any compelling reason why the Kremlin would have interfered in the 2016 election.
His comments follow special counsel Robert Mueller's indictment in federal court on Friday, which alleged 12 Russian military officials hacked Democratic email servers during the campaign.
Gingrich has been a vocal supporter of Trump, but he has on occasion provided constructive critiques of his performance.
Gingrich chastised Trump in April, claiming his administration had botched the release of Deputy Attorney Rod Rosenstein's memo outlining problems with fired FBI Director James Comey.
Gingrich is a late to the party sometime supporter.
Good ol’ Newt. You can always count on him to turn when he’s needed most.
Et Tu Newt?
Where are the DNC servers???
Newt is right. This whole trip has been a PR disaster, which will be reflected in the polls for all the races this fall.
Neither have I, Mr. President.
Maybe Newt can tell us what FACTS he has that is proof the Kremlin screwed with the election. Maybe he can write a book about it or something.
I disagree. The whole system is so convoluted that there is no such thing as protocol anymore. The more rocks that are overturned the more clearly we realize what an isolated president we have. No one to trust. No apologies or clarifications needed.
Boy, the swamp is sure in an uproar.
Hey, if given the choice between trusting our “justice” system and the Russians - I don’t know who I’d pick, either.
Per Q thread, all the Obama files and Hillary emails are contained in the soccer ball Putin gave to Trump.
This is the 5% Newt that I dont care too much for...
Oh shut up.
Wishful thinking?
I like Newt. But if he goes against Trump, I side with Trump.
Good grief. Go away, Newt, you toad.
Whatever.
Sessions was the most serious mistake.
Today was great!
I’m watching the interview of Wallace and Putin right now. Putin says why would Trump come all the way over here so we can stand in front of the world and throw insults at each other. We got together to try to find a way to work together.
Me or Newt?
