McCain has had no change of heart. His approval is basically a sure sign that Kavanaugh is a centrist (he clerked for Kennedy, he is a Bush family devotee, he will not overturn Roe v Wade), and he knows that Trump will not appoint a Left-winger. This is the best that they can get, short of a 6 year period with a SCOTUS vacancy.

Never Trumpers are on board.

How much more conservative do you want Trump to b?

His widely praised pick answers the question.

Or McCain thinks he can best Trump at his own game.

McCain HAS to be aware (if he’s aware of anything, that is) that Trump’s base considers him to be garbage on two legs. Therefore, by approving of Kavanaugh he could be trying to turn Trump’s base against him by making us question his pick (and there are enough posts in this thread - including my own, that show this is working).

Maybe we need to have more trust in Our President rather than this demented old idiot who might not even be alive.

Pretty much same story with Gorsuch's nomination (clerked for Kennedy, Bush appointee, stated publicly that Roe v. Wade was "super settled" law and promised he wouldn't overturn it, had enthusiastic support from John McCain, etc.)
