President Trump issued a proclamation Tuesday ordering flags flown at half-staff on federal buildings to honor the five victims of the Capital Gazette shooting in Annapolis, Md., the White House said.
The decision follows a request over the weekend by Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley (D), which he said was initially not granted.

During a news conference on the Annapolis waterfront Tuesday morning, Buckley thanked Trump but relayed frustration over the process.
We waited all of Saturday, all of Sunday, Buckley said. We understood maybe there was some communications problems. We waited all day Monday and didnt hear anything.

The U.S. flag is flown at half-staff on federal buildings by presidential proclamation as a sign of respect after the deaths of public officials or noteworthy figures and after some mass shootings. In 2016, for example, it was flown at half-staff 53 times, including after mass killings in Orlando and Brussels. More recently, it flew at half-staff after 10 people were killed at a high school in Santa Fe, Tex.

What other explanation is there?
I’m glad he made them wait.
I love President Trump, but this was a mistake.
His perogative. No complaints about meaningless gestures ?
It seems that the flag is at half mast for just about any reason. It has become so bad that I rarely see it at the top of the pole.
Flying the flag at half-staff is pretty much a meaningless gesture anymore.
This was a stupid precedent to start !
The flags will be lowered every other week .
Not a big deal to me. We have more important issues that needs my blood pressure raised.
They criticize him for not flying the flags now they will criticize him for flying the flags. It’s just a troll
My understanding is that the flag is only flown at half last for a political official or military hero.
Why?
I like to say I’m so old I remember when the flag used to fly at full staff.
This flying the flag at half staff for everything is really out of control. It used to be (and, IIRC, the US Flag still states it is) reserved for major political figures: presidents, Senators, governors, etc.
These days, we might as well just lower it every time a reality star overdoses.
Whatever staff member receives these requests ( and there have got to be many) probably applied a standard this local crime against a local business that claimed 5 victims - did not meet for a national order
The local democrat mayor is grandstanding this as a national event and had a public tantrum
The newspaper thinks they are victims of a trump inspired assault on
journalism
A surviving staff member told the president to F-— off when he expressed condolences - little surprise Trump made no further expressions publicly
The haters see this as yet another way to attack the president
Its all a huge slime pit by people seeking attention and personal publicity and you know what? The fact that this feeding frenzy of publicity piles a heavy burden in the grieving families means NOTHING to any if these people
I’ve actually seen flags at half mast and had no idea why they were. It means nothing to me. But then, flags mean nothing to me.
And did I mention the Governor had ordered flags flown at state buildings lowered, and the mayor could have done the same in the city but refused
When five people get shot in Baltimore, it’s not even a story. This is elitist.
Is the flag ever not at half staff these days?
This had become a joke.
It’s like The Nobel Peace Prize.
Once that meant something. Now?
