The left is going low: Editorial: Civility must hold sway
The Boston Herald ^ | 07-03-2018 | Herald Staff

We must not sink to this level.

Hard-working, law-abiding Americans are witness to bad behavior and victims of cultural bullying every day.

Last weekend about 20 people protesting the nation’s immigration policies were arrested in Boston.

Civil unrest — however inconvenient and damaging to the general public — has been fully sanctioned by progressives and any opposition is pilloried. Each disruption benefits from politicians and media who draw fraudulent comparisons to the civil rights movement.

Online Twitter mobs are “dox-ing” (releasing personal information) and intimidating private citizens who voice their opposition to open borders.

On a daily basis, concerned Americans who simply want the immigration laws that their representatives have already passed are labeled racists and xenophobes.

Let’s be civil to each other. Social media trolls are empowered by two things: anonymity and the instant gratification of evoking a response. We should endeavor to resist the temptation to engage. No one goes to social media to have their mind changed.

Being kind and responsible Americans is its own counter-protest and it will yield results. We need to have resolve and it should be buoyed by the knowledge that we are quiet but we are also numerous.

There is still a moral majority in the country and when mobilized it produces great things. One of them we’ll celebrate tomorrow.

that kind of get along go along reach across the aisle attitude is right from the Establishment GOPE handbook. It worked wonders for the Bushies back in the day. The other side interpets “civility” as capitulation and will not stop until one is totally destroyed. Not. one. more. step. backwards.

[Being kind and responsible Americans is its own counter-protest and it will yield results.]

Obeying the law and arresting those who disobey the law will also yield results.

Not starting anything but sure as heck will finish. Not going out looking for trouble but will push back when it finds me.

“Civility must hold sway”. That’s the problem right there.

Civility does not exist in a vacuum, nor does it spontaneously arise. Those are both gun control arguments. Civility only exists when there are penalties for being uncivil.

An adult person you do not know approaches you, screaming, cursing and threatening you. If you are passive to his abuse, what is his motive for civility? However, if you have a gun, you have the means, if he becomes violent, of *enforcing* civility. In most cases, without firing a shot.

If you look at situations of defensive gun use against an aggressor, a *common* theme is that the shooter told or showed the aggressor that he was armed and to stop approaching him, and the aggressor did not.

Civility requires fear of a penalty for being uncivil.

People who *are* civil require some means, individually or collectively to coerce those who are uncivil to at least limit their violent actions. Yes, they may legally scream, shout and curse you. But they may not threaten, and they may not attack.

If they do either of those things, civility must be enforced.

Apparently they haven't noticed during the 46 years since the ink dried on Saul Alinsky's manuscript.

This is wrong. The Bolsheviks - who have now successfully taken over the Democratic party - think that by bullying and shouldering folks into a ditch they can get folks to shut up and give them their way. That is what Bolsheviks do.

Being "civil" just shows, not only them, but everyone else who is on the sidelines, that they are winning and that you can't take on the bullies.

You don't respond to bullies by giving in.

I was here in DC when the whole civility movement got started. It was simply another tool in the hands of the leftists who thought they had a right to run everything to get everyone else to shut up.

You see, suggesting that something could be done better or shouldn't be done at all is pejorative of the person in charge who made those decisions and therefore it is "uncivil." The "civil" thing is to applaud those in charge whenever they do anything - in other words sing the praises of the dear Bolshie leaders whenever they deign to grace you with their presence.

You are right. Civility requires adherence to certain standards. Both sides play by the same rulebook.

But when the left is eye-gouging, ear-biting, and back-stabbing, you either play by their rules or you lose.

People who don’t understand that are chronic losers.

Going down to a noble defeat is a concept for idiots.

Elaborate what? The civility movement which really took hold in DC about 6 years ago now, was all about getting those who were critical of those in charge to simply shut up and give in.

It was another form of bullying, putting a velvet glove around the Bolshevik fist. Amusing to see it being resurrected. But the tactics are transparent.

Let’s be civil to each other

Truly a nice sentiment but impossible to apply when the opposition considers you not just wrong, but evil.

People on the Left -- individually and in a pack -- have demonstrated time and again their contempt for you, for what you stand for, for what you believe. They consider it their mission in life to bully you into silence and, if that doesn't work, to destroy your family, your livelihood and your peace of mind ... even if you haven't done anything to provoke such intolerance ... such personal hatred.

As for me I'm not agressively looking to push anyone's buttons -- especially when the "anyone" is emotionally charged beyond reason -- but neither will I back down from a challenge that threatens my liberty. No way. No more.

Is it civil to jail or hang traitors? After all, all they have done is express a different point of view which we must respect even if we disagree with it.
