Republicans theoretically have a 51-49 majority in the Senate, but in practice, it has been 50-49, since John McCain has left the Senate due to his brain cancer and shows no signs of returning. This makes it difficult for the Senate to pass legislation, of course, but since the Senate needs 60 votes for most matters, McCain's absence is not critical.
...except for judicial nominees. Under current rules, only a majority of senators is needed to approve judicial nominees. That's why every senator counts. With McCain's absence, if one Republican senator defects, and no Democrats support Trump's Supreme Court nominee, that nominee will not be confirmed.
It does not appear likely that McCain will return to the Senate, and yet he has not resigned. There has been some reporting that perhaps the reason he is not resigning is because he wants his wife Cindy to be appointed by the Republican governor of Arizona to take his place. If so, that is most unfortunate.

But it's possible he may not care. He may have gotten some other political promise or payoff, or may just go for broke and do the odious McCain's bidding.
The 2nd best thing he can do is to speak out in favor of any nominee, and the best he can do is to be gentleman and rally all the Republicans to get all the Supremes done quickly. If he does the latter he may rest in some peace for some the harm he had previously done, but not all.

With Susan Collins’ ‘No’ vote it’s 49-50 at best. It’s gonna take some dim votes to get a nominee through.
McCain will be checking out shortly and doesn’t care what he’ll leave.

He was a spoiled Admiral’s brat growing up, then used his father and grandfather in the USNA and USN. Now he uses US. PUNK.

The rules were recently changed, and the filibuster is gone.
Only a simple majority is needed, and if necessary, Vice President Pence would break the tie. So only 50 votes plus the Vice President’s vote if necessary.
I want proof of life that McCain is alive.

Also, three Democrats are in strong Trump country and did vote to confirm Gorsuch.
