Paramount Network has slotted July 30 at 10 PM for the premiere of Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story. The network also unveiled the full trailer for the six-part original docuseries, which recounts the life and legacy of Trayvon Martin, whose 2012 shooting death polarized the nation and gave rise to the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
Trayvon Martin was an unarmed 17-year-old African American high school student shot and killed by a neighborhood watch member in the Sanford, Florida community on February 26, 2012 where he was visiting a friend with his father. George Zimmerman was acquitted of a second-degree murder charge utilizing Floridas Stand Your Ground Law, claiming he shot Martin in self-defense.
The fatal encounter between Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman and the subsequent trial sparked nationwide outrage and protests and shined an unforgiving light on issues including race, politics, power, money and, gun control.
Interviews combined with home videos, family photos, and news footage provide an intimate look at the story of a young life tragically cut short and that spurred a movement giving rise to a rallying cry that still resonates today, #BlackLivesMatter.
Featured in the docuseries are Trayvon Martins parents Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin; Martin family lawyer Donald Crump, Angela Rye, Reverend Al Sharpton, Angela Davis and Carmelo Anthony, among others.
Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story also addresses the significant cultural and societal issues surrounding the tragedy as well as an in-depth examination into the investigation, trial, and the not-guilty verdict.
The fact that Trayvon was 14 is almost totally meaningless.
He was a very large football player. Big enough to beat up most men.
I have no idea what the tape says as I have not heard it but it was definitely brought up at the trial that Trayvon, a hard core criminal was indeed looking in windows.
He had been caught red handed with stolen jewelry and burglary tools. They did not prosecute because the jewelry was never identified. He had a long criminal history.
Zimmerman almost certainly saved future people’s lives.
You have swallowed the liberal falsehoods about Trayvon hook, line and sinker, which is kinda pathetic on FR.
Trayvon was shot while attempting murder. Trayvon was bad to the bone until the instant he died.
He is a black hero because many many blacks view criminals in a favorable light.
He was 17-—one just one inch under 6 feet tall——not a little kid.
.
I stand corrected.
He was on the phone with police, reporting suspicious behavior.
"Hes 14 years old. Why doesnt he have the right to be frightened and feel threatened that a grown man is following him?"
Not relevant. He could feel frightened or not. So what?
"But does it not cross anyones minds that a 14 year old should not be in danger of being shot walking home from the store?"
He wasn't in danger of being shot walking home from the store. He was in danger of being shot when he started beating a man's head into the sidewalk.
"The guy police shot down in Walmart. Its an open carry state. Is this not troubling to anyone?"
It is. I agree with you about that case. But you have your facts wrong about the Zimmerman case.
"Yeah, you know, Zimmerman should have stayed in the car."
Did Zimmerman deserve to be beat to death for getting out of his car?
The reality of Trayvon back then:
Brought to you by skittles.
He also liked to street fight.
Celebrate the premiere with some purple drank.
Travon Martin was 17, not 14. At this time, he's also bigger than Zimmerman, and an athlete.
Zimmerman has a documented history of standing up for his minority neighbors, and against the police when they try to paper-over malfeasance.
Here's the transcript of the call: https://archive.org/stream/326700-full-transcript-zimmerman/326700-full-transcript-zimmerman_djvu.txt .
In the recording, you can hear that Zimmerman only gets out of the truck when the dispatcher asks where Martin is and what he is doing.
At the end of the transcript, Zimmerman has no idea where Martin is, and is now calmly waiting for the police. Martin has successfully gone home.
The testimony of Martins friend who was talking on the phone during the time, portrayed Martin not as afraid or scared - which you've surmised from nothing - but rather that he thinks it is a gay guy following him, ditched him, then made it home.
Even more than that. Zimmerman did not go for his gun until he felt Trayvon grab for it. Up to that point he was taking the beating, of his head on the concrete, only trying to move himself to the grass.
Sorry for getting his age confused.
But still.
But still nothing.
Trayvon was wandering up between condos even though he knew the way back to his father’s condo perfectly. He went back to his father’s condo yet decided to go back and find Zimmerman. Trayvon confronted Zimmerman, cursed him out, sucker punched him, jumped on him and started beating him, started repeatedly slamming his head into the concrete, noticed Zimmerman’s gun in the holster and grabbed for it and then started yelling “you’re gonna die tonight, you’re gonna die tonight...”
But still what? Do you dispute that Zimmerman was walking back to his car when Trayvon confronted him and proceeded to assault Zimmerman, banging his head against the pavement? Do you dispute Zimmerman's claim that Trayvon was going for Zimmerman's gun, and then and only then did Zimmerman shoot Trayvon?
Nothing like clinging to a liberal falsehood on FR in the face of overwhelming contradictory evidence to that falsehood.
Ditto that.
Bout time...now yous evyone gongosee dat white craka kill po unarmed kid. Bout time I says. Li’l Tray dindonuffin.
I loved Godless.
Everyone knows it was all Zimmerman’s fault because he got out of the car. Safari rules dictate you have to stay inside your car at all times when approaching roaming ferile youts.
