I have no news story to link to here. To the contrary, I havent seen this question asked once in the flood of coverage since Kennedys announcement yesterday. So lets ask it.
With McCain out, Senate Republicans have zero margin for error on the nomination. Its 50/49. Either Susan Collins or Lisa Murkowski or anti-Trumpers Jeff Flake and Bob Corker, both of whom are retiring could sink the nominee if Democrats hang together. And they will, I think. The Democratic base will get so hot over this that Manchin and the rest of the red-staters will hang back to see what Republicans are doing. If Collins or anyone else makes some disapproving noises that imperil the nominee, pressure from the left on Manchin et al. to vote no and kill the nomination will be enormous. Its easy to imagine red-state Dems supporting a nominee whos going to be confirmed anyway on a party-line Republican vote. Its almost unimaginable that theyd *rescue* a nominee whos headed for defeat due to a Republican split.

We dont know enough about his diagnosis to be precise - I bet its melanoma, not a glioma - but the fact that hes been out this long PROBABLY means times almost up.
Prove to me that McCains still alive
What are you, a necrophobe?
Only in Washington do supposedly responsible people hang on the every word of a man with a brain tumor.
then the party shouldn’t even exist ..
Correct.
Simple answer the question is No. The premise of the question as to cause and effect for McCain’s decision is absurd.
The only way that the nominee will go down is if there is some real (or widely believed) dirt that is uncovered. Otherwise, political necessity will require some Dems to vote for the nominee.
Ducey better follow through with a solid pick and reliable vote SCOTUS vote........
With a Glioma his brain capacity must be going fast. He needs to be told he is stepping down.
Of course, the bastard could just do the world a favor and drop dead.
This man is full of hate. Very doubtful he would resign.
No. Next question.
“Or Ducey simply delays naming a successor to McCain until after the primary.”
That’s been the plan now that their scheme to remove Bennett from the ballot failed.
But a Supreme Court vacancy adds another wrinkle. Ducey may be pressured to pledge to appoint somebody OTHER than a McCain.
Or, which is their fear, McCain may drop dead in the mean time (another reason they wanted Bennett off the ballot), and then, once again, if Ducey appoints another McCain, he’s toast in the primary.
They’re in quite a pickle just because McCain wanted his successor hand-picked, not elected by the people.
They say he’s waiting for the AZ Governor primary so that the Guv can pull the switch. No idea why. It is obvious the fix is in. But no one knows what Cindy would do.
Primary is August 28th
My gut tells me he WILL resign within the week to give the extra vote.
I think so too. We only need one or two.
It would be the right thing to do.
So, no, McCain won’t do it.
He needs to be told he already stepped down.
He should have the grace to retire and let the people of AZ be properly represented.
But no he is a RINO playing it for all he is worth.
McConnell is VERY confident that he has the votes. He knows there are red state democrats who are up for reelection, and others, who will not be able to come up with any legitimate reasons NOT to confirm. There are plenty who don’t care that they have no legitimate reasons, but he only needs a small number. One of the few times I’m glad he’s Senate Majority Leader. He apparently has plenty of power, and he’s evidently beginning to realize he needs to support Trump.
