Marijuana addiction is real, and rising
Washington Post via SF Chronicle ^ | June 24th, 2018 | Christine Vestal, The Washington Post

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - For as long as most residents can remember, smoking marijuana has been a part of life here. The fact that California legalized the practice in January went practically unnoticed in this quiet town a half-hour's drive north of San Francisco, where some say the normalization of America's marijuana culture got its start.

For Quintin Pohl and other teenagers before him, smoking pot was a rite of passage. It was a diversion from the loneliness he felt at home when his parents were splitting up and a salve for middle-school angst. It was his entire social life in seventh and eighth grades, he said, when social life is everything.

Even though nearly all his friends were using marijuana and seeming to enjoy it, Pohl said, at some point his marijuana use took a turn he never saw coming: He became addicted.

Many people are unaware of marijuana addiction. But in the public health and medical communities, it is a well-defined disorder that includes physical withdrawal symptoms, cravings and psychological dependence. Many say it is on the rise, perhaps because of the increasing potency of genetically engineered plants and the use of concentrated products, or because more users are partaking multiple times a day.

“We’re going to lose an entire generation. “

Hysterical BS.

There is absolutely zero evidence to support such a claim.

Starting to sound more & more like a CNN propaganda-caster, Douglas.

Keep trying to equate behavior from the extreme edges of our society as a predictor for the main population.

Progressives have been using this tactic for decades lol!

Well, yeah! Pretty good fallacy but rare enough in the face of the many popular fallacies issued by marijuana religionists.

“Cannabis cannibals.” Still not as good as “dope fiends,” though. ;-D

“Pretty good fallacy but rare enough in the face of the many popular fallacies issued by marijuana religionists.”

When anyone uses fallacy to make false assertions & promote idiocy aIl can only laugh & feel pity for you, I mean them.

Just know I am a thankful Catholic convert & any suggesting that I am a ‘marijuana religionist” is nothing more than you expressing your ignorance.

IMO, the difference between a authoritarian prohibitionist & a anti-America progressive is nil. Both are anti-liberty & have no place in a free society.

I'm concerned with the ready availability

Kids report that they get pot almost as easily as beer or cigarettes, although the latter legal drugs are much more widely used among adults. This evidence indicates that the best way to keep a drug away from kids is to legalize it for adults, thus giving its sellers an economic incentive to not sell to kids.

combined with the naive thinking that pot is harmless.

By all means, let's educate them - with facts, not the laughable 'pot makes you shoot your friends' twaddle that the federal drug czar has been serving up for decades.

most of the alcoholics are or have been frequent pot smokers.

You mean most of the alcoholics you know?

nearly everyone is acquainted with some who became addicted to booze as a consequence of their drug abuse.

"Everyone knows one who' does not imply 'most are'. As they say, the plural of "anecdote" is not "data".

They're often in the news.

Those who make the news are not a random sample, so cannot be validly extrapolated to the whole population.

the preliminary toxicology report from Eugene’s autopsy revealed Eugene, 31, had been smoking marijuana near the time of the incident.

Investigators had hoped the initial tests might lead them to quickly identify other drugs Eugene might have taken which could have caused such psychotic behavior, but the law enforcement official said it will now be at least two months before all the lab work will be completed.

In other words, law enforcement officials know that cannabis alone doesn't cause this sort of behavior. You should learn from them.

"Toxicology test have found Rudy Eugene, who was shot dead by police following the horrific attack on Ronald Poppo, only had marijuana in his system"

I remember that story; another toxicologist explained that tests did not exist for every street drug out there, so their presence could not be ruled out.

And the reason so many poorly-known street drugs are out there is that the war on drugs incentivizes the creation and use of new basement concoctions that are legal (until the laws catch up).

Thanks for the moment of openness on your background and perspective. I lived in that kind of ethnic community for a few years once. Interesting experience.

"IMO, the difference between a authoritarian prohibitionist & a anti-America progressive is nil. Both are anti-liberty & have no place in a free society."

No government will purposely allow addicts and gangsters to run amok indefinitely, and drug bosses eventually become primary objects of severe punishment. Maybe I should find out what's offered for going back into criminal justice work despite being older.
