The mother of a mixed-race family is asking a popular ice cream manufacturer to change the name of one of its flavors to be more inclusive. Traci Schmidley says she is a mother of six and a foster mom to more. Some of her children are black and some are white. She says it was her 10-year-old son who first noticed the name of the ice cream, "The Great Divide."
"The Great Divide" is half vanilla and half chocolate. The container has a line right down the middle dividing the off-white vanilla from the chocolate brown. When the family bought a tub of it for a celebration, her oldest child said the line down the middle reminded him of the Mason-Dixon line.
"[He] jokingly commented that the Great Divide flavor should be called the Civil War flavor," Schmidley wrote in a blog post on "Love What Matters."
She says her son is "talented academically and adores all subjects, but math and history are his favorites." The ice cream immediately reminded him of "a time in history when our nation appeared to be irrevocably divided," the mother wrote.
Schmidley says her son noticed the mixture of black and white people around their table -- all of them family. They are not divided like the ice cream.
The mother from rural Louisiana wrote the blog post to call attention to the message the label sends and to urge Blue Bell to change the name and packaging. "My husband and I are both teachers and together we teach our children, along with several of their friends, out of our home," Schmidley wrote. "We have a huge dining room table that is almost always full of people, which is just the way we think it should be."

Every nut under the sun seems to be stepping forward to “demand” that some company or institution change its ways to take into account their “feelings”. And they’re apparently too dense to understand that if one deranged person can demand this, why can’t one other knucklehead “demand” the exact opposite in order to make that OTHER one person feel better about things?
How about the company responding: “The huge majority of our customers like this product and its name. If you don’t like the product, don’t buy it, or buy it and mix up the two portions of the ice cream to your satisfaction. Now leave us alone.”

As a youngster, I thought the term “the great divide” referred to continental divide, the Rocky Mountains, et al. So, it was really puzzling to read my 2nd gr. grandmother’s diary, where occasionally she made reference to someone having crossed “the Great Divide.” I remember thinking it was odd that she knew so many people who crossing the mountains into California. Then someone, probably my grandmother or her sister, told me “crossing the Great Divide” meant someone had died and had crossed from the light of day into the darkness of eternity. So the Great Divide has nothing to do with a the Mason Dixon line or race, just death.
“The Great Divide” is exactly what liberals have brought us to. There used to be comity and a lot of unity. You’d think liberals would rejoice at the name “The Great Divide” because of what they have accomplished.
I just came up with the FIX!!!
Fill the bottom half of the carton with Vanilla then put the Chocolate on the top half.
Then they can feel superior because they are on top!
Name it “Cover Up”
That is a great idea. If you could make a translucent, fruit flavored, lightly colored ice or Ice Milk dessert, it would work. Of course some might say, if you buy that particular flavor, then you must be Trans or thinking about becoming one. Eyebrows will be quietly raised when a customer orders a double dip of Trans, with plenty of nuts.

Indeed. Too successful, too rich, and too much idle time. A serious nation (see United States of America, pre 1980) didn't have time for this bosh. It was busy building a nation, conquering enemies, going to the moon, electrifying the nation, building roads, damming rivers, expanding westward, laying rails from Omaha to California, refining gasoline, and all the rest. You name it -- it was all serious business done by serious hard working people.
It doesn't bode well when the idle idiots have time on their hands to create such mischief.
The obvious solution is to ban both Chocolate and Vanilla Ice Cream. It could not be more racist but I am most offended by the fact the container is a full 1/2 gallon.
Yes...I have recently been pondering the self centeredness of so many people....I read PINTEREST for crafts, books, etc ...I’m amazed at the number of posters who focus on ME...ME...ME...what I’M DOING...WHAT I’m THINKING of DOING...What I DID....and on and on and on. It’s one of the reasons our culture has deteriorated so much and why I believe so many are so unhappy.
Here in L.A, Blue Bell is the unofficial ice cream of the homos so I avoid it. Then again, if I ran this company, why would I change a product because of a very, very small percentage of the population, that may not even be solid customers?
