Legendary Austin music and BBQ venue Stubb's has pledged to stop using plastic drinking straws. In a tweet, Stubb's said they would discontinue use "effective immediately" and also highlighted just how many straws Americans use in a day: We pledged to stop using plastic drinking straws. Americans use approximately 500 million straws daily. That's enough straws to circle the earth 2.5x. Effective immediately we will no longer be using straws. Join us in fighting pollution by saying 'no' to plastic drinking straws!

I wonder if Austin will ban all of the Barbeque joints because of the smoke they emit. That would be funny as hell. If it were to ever happen, thank the Lord for Lockhart.
I suggest replacing them with asbestos or lead straws.
That would mean that every American would purchase 2-3 beverages daily, away from home. Just cannot be true.
Exactly. Remember grocery store checker asking you paper or plastic?
Save the Trees! It was bull crap. They wanted to shame you into giving up paper bags for plastic. Now those dam plastic bags are blown everywhere. Stuck in trees, floating in rivers and lakes, out in the ocean. Blame the stupid dam hippies.
“Now those dam plastic bags are blown everywhere. Stuck in trees———
The VERY TREES that we saved by using plastic. (Sigh)
.
I always say paper.
I stock pile them. Two paper bags crumpled with kindling makes a nice fire in the wood stove.
Just wait until Austin bans BBQ because of smoke and cattle.
That would be rich.
Brings to mind the Top 10% High School graduate ruling. It was UT’s fault (discrimination against whites) but in 2010, UT got all upset and whined to the Legislature that they’d have to close down Longhorn Football (!!!!!!!) if they had to abide by the rule. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! So, they got an exemption down to admitting only the Top 8% but the rest of the state colleges, through no fault of their own, continued to have to admit the original ruling against UT of the top 10%. Suuuuuuuuure, as if UT couldn’t find slots to admit 100 football players.
The story is airing on the local news right now. Saying SXSW is also banned from using plastic straws. Oooh, plastics are bad! Tell that to Dell with their plastic computers. Tell that to UT with their giant plastic sex toys next time they protest campus carry with “Cocks Not Glocks.”
Austin sucks in General.
When we go to the MotoGP and F1 races up the always stay down in Gruene on the river, Never set foot in the City Limits of Lostin.
Without even making the illegals sign a pledge that they will never use plastic! What a chicken outfit.
Every tree with a bag caught in it should say “thank you for not using me to make that bag.”
In 1949 I was 6 and blew the paper off my straw in the cafeteria, the old hag principal made me stand behind my chair for the rest of the lunch period. My first of many punishments to come—and I’m a girl!
:-)
.
Well, some of us use more than one straw per day.
Is this the same company that sells Stubbs BBQ sauce in the grocery stores?
Straws can be made of different "plastics" but because of the abundance of fracked natural gas, straws are being made from natural gas, and it is not waste.
Ethane is removed from natural gas and dehydrogenated to produce ethene or ethylene and into polyethylene platic. Or, the propane can removed from nat gas and processed into polypropylene plastic.
Ethanol can also be used as a feedstock to make polyethylene.
The Petroleum product known as naptha, which is not waste, can also be used as feedstock to produce these platics
Yes,
Stubb’s barbecue sauce in you local grocery
is the same Stubb’s barbecue in Austin, Texas.
I guess I’ll stick with Sweet Baby Ray’s.
