'Freedom city'? Going beyond 'sanctuary,' Austin, Texas, vows to curtail arrests

Amid the controversy over sanctuary cities, Austin this month took its fight against strict immigration law enforcement a step further by declaring itself to be the first “freedom city” in Texas. City Council members unanimously passed two resolutions last week that will restrict police attempts to question immigrants about their status and curtail arrests for nonviolent crimes.

One of the new city resolutions requires officers who question immigrants about status to also say that their questions about immigration need not be answered. The other resolution directs police to avoid arrests for misdemeanors, including those for smoking marijuana, having drug paraphernalia, and taking part in petty theft — crimes that city data shows frequently end in arrests of black and Latino residents.

While Austin is among the country’s first so-called freedom cities, it’s part of a wider movement around decriminalizing low-level offenses and decreasing arrests. According to Local Progress, a national network of progressive city officials, some council members in El Paso and Dallas are also considering “freedom city” proposals.

Maybe police should refuse to make ANY arrests, “fearing they will be responsible for errors”.

These “laws” will not survive the first attack on a politician.

Two friends, one Caucasian and one Hispanic, are drug dealers. The cops have been watching them. They arrest them and only find drug paraphernalia. As the Caucasian is taken off to jail the Hispanic says “So long, Amigo. I’ll visit you I jail.”

Texans ought to build a wall around it and then set fire to what’s inside. I can understand this $hit happening here in CA, but in Texas?

The ubiquitous “Keep Austin Weird” slogan around town is code for “Keep Austin Liberal!”

Yet another shining example of radical liberals, with their fantasy ideas, destroying a city. IE Detroit, SanFran, NYC.

The cops there, make pretty decent money and are routinely trying to poach experienced officers from other big cities. But, with the passage of this and the general liberal attitude to law enforcement, that place is going to suck to work at. SanFran has the same problems. Officers make great money, but they walk on egg shells every day and just hope to make it to retirement day.

I wonder if a guy like Ricky Perry, in his zeal to attract businesses from places like California, is happy with how Texas is changing? He went to all the high tax, liberal states to attract businesses. And being businesses, they saw the dollar signs and started moving. And many of their liberal employees moved with them. Bringing their liberal disease with them.

As with so many other states, Texas will soon be governed by the populations of Austin, Dallas/Ft Worth, Houston, San Antonio. All the densely populated, urban areas with their liberals and illegals will turn statewide elections like they do in Cali, Illinois, NY.

Some invaders see free rape and no-fault murder. Austin overlords will not be part of collateral damage. Agenda advanced.

Not that it’s likely to happen to a big city like Austin, but the Texas Attorney General can abolish a city charter with the stroke of a pen. It happened to Kendleton and Splendora back in the 80’s when they were cracking down on little towns that were funding themselves entirely by speed traps.

If we could do that with Dallas and Houston as well. I already consider Austin a no go zone. Nothing there that I need or want.

I live in Austin and the City is a complete lost cause. City Council wastes time and valuable tax dollars on pet Liberal policies. We had a homeless camp under a bridge a block from my house, couches, chairs and tables even a cook stove made from a Walmart shopping cart. The police would come and run them out and the camp would be set up again in a day or two. This went on for months. We were having a drought. The first rain came and washed away all the homeless and all of their crap. They have not been back.
