An emergency room doctor at a Northern California hospital has been suspended after she was caught on video allegedly ridiculing a patient after he collapsed from an apparent anxiety attack.
Samuel Bardwell, a 20-year-old student at West Valley College in Saratoga, made a trip to the El Camino Hospital Los Gatos after passing out during a basketball practice on June 11, The Mercury News reported.
Beth Keegstra, the ER doctor who attended to Bardwell who reportedly was unable to speak and was numb at the time seemingly didn't take the man's health claims seriously when she was caught on camera allegedly mocking him.
"Sir, you are the least sick of all the people who are here, who are dying," Keegstra is heard saying in a video recorded by Bardwell's father, Donald. "There, you picked your head up. Now don't try to tell me you can't move. C'mon, sit up."
The doctor, who Bardwell reportedly waited four hours to see, begins to loudly tell the 20-year-old to "sit up" and is seen trying to push him upwards on the hospital bed.
"She's literally yanking my arm," Bardwell says, repeatedly telling Keegstra he can't physically sit up.
"You want us to wheel you to your house in the gurney?" the doctor quips, before laughing at Bardwell as he says it's difficult for him to inhale.
"He can't inhale, wow! He must be dead! Are you dead, sir?" Keegstra says, later adding "this is ridiculous."

The ER doctor agrees with me.
You have no medical doctor agreeing with you.
Get a clue.
I see we have a lot of “experts” here on both sides of the issue - funny how all the “experts” can make such definitive statements with only the data avail;able in the story.....seems like both the doc and the patient have issues....perhaps they have met before....
The ER “doctor’s” employers agrees with me.
Some are medical doctors.
You’re an idiot.
They did the right thing by suspending her.
One last point is that this is, in part, a consequence of people using the ED for things they shouldn't. It leads to the kind of cynicism this doc displayed. It's not an excuse for her unprofessional behavior, but it is a problem.
You don’t have to be a musician to know a musician sucks.
Not true at all. They can last several hours to days in extreme cases; I know because it has happened to me many times. When I had my first I was kept under observation for two days in an Army hospital with pulse rate going to 220 bpm and blood pressure extremely high. I actually blacked out multiple times. I learned tricks to prevent them in my 20s, so they are rare today, but every once in great while I still get them, usually triggered by lack of sleep, stress, or sensitivity to food or medications. Taking prednisone or MAOI triggered the worst ones I've ever had that literally lasted several days. During bad attacks these days I get pulse rate pushing 140-160, and BP as high as 180/120 (normally 120/70)-- much less serious than the ones I had in my 20s. Point is-- these can cause physical symptoms sufficient to send you to the ER. .
The article I posted states the 30 minute limit.
Oh come on. Hes twenty years old. Hes no compliant with his anxiety meds.
He goes to jr college and probably lives at home with mom and dad He is an attention seeker a wuss a snowflake. ERs are busy places that have very sick patients. This guy is lucky All that happened to him is someone called him out on his malingering
Really? Anxiety is an emergent condition? As emergent as an appendicitis?
Precisely
Tranny I’ll bet.
Oh please
This brat hoes to jr college. Manages to be non compliant taking his meds because he couldnt get to the drug store ( what a joke that is). He is an attention seeker and spoiled by his parents. This kid will not turn out well
Strokes heart attacks appendicitis gall bladder attacks broken bones knife wounds maybe even gun shit wounds
Those are what ERs are for
The docs in our ED are some of the most patient and caring people Ive ever met.
What is missing here is an accurate patient history. AND an ahole for a doc.
Yeah he’s spoiled. Read the article
He’s non compliant with his medications. His excuse? I couldn’t get to the drug store. He goes to Jr college. He’s twenty friggin years old and his dad is filming him at the ER being called out for being the malingerer he is. What a joke.
Apparently you think ERs are for any problem. Not true. This spoiled brat is taking up a bed at a busy ER He won’t be admitted to the hospital because he has anxiety. He keeps changing his story. This puke would be taking up a bed needed by someone who actually needs help.....heart attack, stroke, appendicitis, broken bones, knife wounds, etc
R ad the article
Anxiety attacks don’t kill people. Plenty of ways to handle them without going to ER. Puke brat was noncompliant with med useagr....and why. He couldn’t get to the drug store. He’s twenty friggin years old. He’s spoiled rotten and is in ER with his dad filming. Good Lord that us as red a flag as there ever could be.
Little boy complained because this tired doc pulled on his arm to help him sit up and talked firmly at him. Erma a Gawd. No wonder so many in health care think some patients are useless
Yup. If you mean those who are busy defending this spoiled beat of a kid
Or you need to not equate what you saw with this case.
Read the story. Doesn’t sound anything like what happened here.
Precisely
Except that’s not what got told to the ER. Kid had multiple stories. The doc says that. That is characteristic of those abusing an ER
I spent the better part of 6 months in complete fear and terror over my anxiety issues. Anxiety can cripple you to the point where you are afraid you are going to drop dead at any moment.
