It is often said that Washington, DC is filled with a bunch of nerds dominated by psychopaths. Others say that politics is simply Hollywood for ugly people. These are usually said in a joking manner and often uttered after coming back from a young professional happy hour here in the swamp. Perhaps the most soulless congregation of folks ever assembled can be found at those kind of events.
But it turns out that a recent study showing the population density of psychopaths could confirm anecdotal suspicions that these two areas of American life have more in common than either would like to admit.
A report conducted by Ryan Murphy at Southern Methodist University found that Connecticut contained the most psychopaths per capita followed quickly by California. New Jersey and New York followed next. But our nation's capital by far had the highest level of psychopathic behavior than anywhere in the country.

While this study is fun, is this merely a function of more people from these states seeking psychological care?
...and to make it worse many are elected officials....
Do psychopaths routinely, voluntarily present themselves for psychological care?
Ha. Sometimes the jokes write themselves. lol
I wonder if they mean police handcuffed a person who was raving and ranting and their arrest counts as one point.
Neighbors tackling a man who tried to kill everyone in sight at a picnic counts as one point.
Can Maxine Waters, John McCain, Schumer, and Bill and Hillary count as more than one point? Seems fair. Huma for marrying Carlos Danger Weiner counts as three?
Blacks voting Dem and shocked that they are overtaxed and given no city services, respect from politicians or job opportunities and then voting Dem again the next time in Detroit and Chicago.
He studied the personality traits of a random sample of the population.
Do not confuse a psychopath with a psychotic. A psychopath is highly functional, extroverted, sociable, but completely without guilt or empathy. Politicians and used-car salesmen are typical examples.
I’m trying to figure out whether or not I’m a “DC psychopath” or not: If I want to stay here does that mean I’m a psychopath. OR, if I want to leave here for a nice place in the mid-west, does that mean I’m NOT a psychopath?
FYI: I’m in the process of leaving DC, permanently.
Interesting.

Psychopaths dont seek psychological care. Unless, of course theyre on trial and think feigning insanity will benefit them.
Psychopaths are people with personality disorders. Those are disorders of longstanding, they really go to the core. And they are almost completely intractable. Some do seem to soften a bit in old age, but, I would not count on it.
Traditional psychotherapy does nothing for these people. Meds are of limited utility unless there is an underlying treatable disorder, eg depression. Good luck getting them to actually take meds.
In my professional opionion, rounding up all the psychopaths and throwing them into a killer shark tank would be a grand humanitarian gesture.
There you go. And they don't usually THINK that they need psychological help. BTK serial murderer Dennis Rader is a good example. He was highly active in the community, on the board of his local church.

Your larger point seems to hold (that this report is not based on reports based on care). But psychopaths typically face depression, schizophrenia, substance abuse, ADHD, anxiety, and other conditions. And while they may not be interested in seeking care for what they might see as the “giftedness” of psychopathy, for all I know, they may be quite motivated to seek care for these traits which limit their success.
Also, institutionalized persons are frequently identified with psychopathy. (I’m not sure whather that’s still considered valid.)
I beg to differ. Psychopaths are highly functioning individuals. Many own businesses and are community leaders. They are never happier and more UNdepressed than when they are engaging in their favorite grissly avocation.
Even the risk of getting caught is part of the excitement of their lives. They thrive on it.
Plus we just swap them out every two years or so sometimes too.
No surprise. Most are gevrnment workers. Either elected or hired by elected.
They may well be highly functioning. But psychopathy *is* cormorbid with all of those conditions. I would speculate that the fact that they are often otherwise very successful would mean that they are more likely to seek help based on those conditions. And that help would be highly more likely to be pharmacological (as opposed to spiritual, therapeutic, etc.), and thus, caught in epidemiology reports.
It’s called the Federal government.
