James Hansen wishes he wasn't so right about global warming
Associated Press ^ | 18 June 2018 | SETH BORENSTEIN

James Hansen wishes he was wrong. He wasn't.

NASA's top climate scientist in 1988, Hansen warned the world on a record hot June day 30 years ago that global warming was here and worsening. In a scientific study that came out a couple months later, he even forecast how warm it would get, depending on emissions of heat-trapping gases.

The hotter world that Hansen envisioned in 1988 has pretty much come true so far, more or less. Three decades later, most climate scientists interviewed rave about the accuracy of Hansen's predictions given the technology of the time.

Hansen won't say, "I told you so."

"I don't want to be right in that sense," Hansen told The Associated Press, in an interview is his New York penthouse apartment. That's because being right means the world is warming at an unprecedented pace and ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland are melting.

Hansen said what he really wishes happened is "that the warning be heeded and actions be taken."

They weren't. Hansen, now 77, regrets not being "able to make this story clear enough for the public."

I wish I was wrong about much of the postmodernist left wanting the deaths of Trump supporters.

this is also when the researchers found the monitors were set up by a/c exhaust ports on roof tops and on parking lot asphalt areas, or next to geysers at Yellowstone not to mention none below the equator or on ocean buoys, with all the resources of NASA an the weather service the sensors should be every where. Deliberate fraud by culpable politicians on a to big to fail premise.

I thought the article was fair, more or less.

James Hansen is a stand out in his field. I can't think of a time he was more accurate in his predictions. James never thinks twice about getting the science right. Any proposal he comes up with should be executed as soon as possible.

The global temperature has been increasing since the end of the last ice age. It will continue until the beginning of the next one.

Minor point: The hockey stick graph was produced by one Professor Michael Mann, of Penn State. It is Michael Mann who was hassling Mark Steyn in the Canadian court system

You are correct, and it is *not* a minor point.

I apologize to Dr. Hansen for my confusion.

More importantly, your graphic refers to "model(s)"

If the "models" are accurate, they would ALL agree, and there would only be a single model needed.

Well, it’s minor in the sense that I too lump Hansen and Mann together as co-conspirators. Hansen is still an ass who used his government appointment to tout his religion. Mann is a self-righteous ass who also used the court system.

Rush Limbaugh has lived on the Florida coast for 20 years and has not lost an inch of beach yet, notice that they always say it hasn't been this hot or cold since 1957, 1933, 1890, 1940 or since the ice age, now they intentionally leave out anthropomorphic (human carbon use) and say scientists mistook the Global Climate Change that they actually meant. imagine if your doctor or lawyer kept saying i actually meant this or that and maybe you would have lived or stayed out of prison, then tells you to have faith in his updated reasons.

Yep. I distinctly remember reading an article - back in 1999 - in USA Today, about how Florida would be completely underwater - along with most other coastal cities - by 2016.

Not even close.

FR had an interesting piece the other day about how the oceans would rise .6mm / year due to global warming/cooling/change/whatever. Lotsa hype and hyperbole, we're all going to die, etc etc etc.

.6mm/yr is 60mm/century. Or a little over 2 inches, in 100 years.

I'm not sweating it.

James Hansen wishes he was wrong. He wasn't.

O.J. Simpson wishes he was wrong about the real killer who got away after murdering Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman. He wasn't.

Both statements make as much sense.

False Forecasts

One of Hansen’s more embarrassing false forecasts was his contribution to the advancement of global cooling theories in the 1970s. Science published a study in 1971 by S. Ichtiaque Rasool and Stephen H. Shneider titled “Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide and Aerosols: Effects of Large Increases on Global Climate.” The study used computer models to suggest pollution particles in the atmosphere would cause a cooling effect in global temperatures. Hansen played a role in this study, a fact not discovered until decades after publication. He had, in fact, developed the computer models that helped lead to the study’s conclusions.

In 1988, we were in a period of very high solar activity:

Now we're entering a period of low activity. Over the next decade, we will see how things go.
