Leading figures of both parties pressured President Trump on Sunday to halt his administrations practice of separating children from their parents when apprehended at the border, as the issue further polarized the already divisive immigration debate in Washington.
Republican lawmakers, the former first lady Laura Bush and a onetime adviser to Mr. Trump joined Democrats, including former President Bill Clinton, in condemning the family separations that have removed nearly 2,000 children from their parents in just six weeks. The administration pushed back, arguing that it was just enforcing the law a false assertion that President Trump has made repeatedly.

gobbels would be proud these pandering rep lawmakers. pure manipulation of the soft-hearted.
the Dems are leading us around in circles on this topic.
Back in 1997, The Flores Agreement set the time that unaccompanied children could be held (later also applied to families, which gave those who dragged a kid with them preferential treatment over single adults). HHS, in normal times, might be able to background check and screen sponsors for unaccompanied children in a short time, but with an influx of over a quarter of a million border jumpers dragging children with them, the logistics has become an enormous challenge.
An attempt was made during the Zero administration to set up family immigration shelters so that children weren’t separated from parents (mostly mothers; fathers seem to be in short supply). Remember all the stories of hotels and such being rented for centers? Guess what happened? According to the NYT:
” Opening a large family immigration detention facility in Dilley, Tex., he held a news conference to showcase what he called an effective deterrent.
The steps led to just the kind of brutal images that Mr. Obamas advisers feared: hundreds of young children, many dirty and some in tears, who were being held with their families in makeshift detention facilities.
Immigrant advocacy groups denounced the policy...Before long, the Obama administration would face legal challenges, and be forced to stop detaining families indefinitely. “
So we’re damned if we do and damned if we don’t. The moral of the story is, the children should immediately be returned to their home country as wards of that country to be placed with extended family there. IF the parent(s) manage to get asylum, then they should be able to legally go back and legally get their kids. For the majority that don’t get asylum, their kids are back home with grandma and grandpa, (or daddy or mommy, depending on who dragged them over the border) waiting for them.

Never Trump bushes are getting desperate, laura is their last shot. They are sinking into obscurity, their remaining supporters are democrats. The bush scam is done.
“Laura Bush’s husband separated some 5,000 American servicemen from their families in Iraq and another 2,200 in Afghanistan.”
You mean permanently separated by death.
There were MILLIONS who entered war zones. And, no, they did not take their children with them into combat.
She separated Mike Douglas from his family when she ran that red light.
How about we enforce immigration laws?
It needs to be remembered at all times that this is choreographed concern. The dems don’t give a shit about children or anyone else for that matter.
And still.. no wall.
After next election I will no longer vote Republican. I’m done with the two party system.
I am beyond sick of it. Tired of our “leaders” worrying themselves with, and the media yapping to us about, this issue year after year after year. Life is too short for this BS.
Confession time, when Dems used to talk about W coming across a smirking ignorant (fill in blank) I low key agreed with them. I liked how he represented right after 911 but that’s the only time I actually did.
At this point they are so incompetent I say we should demand a special emergency vote and we the people decide what shall be done regarding the matter. After all, it is US that have to live with the consequences either way.
When they lobby for American parents to not be separated for their children after they commit crimes, then I’ll actually consider them to be sincere, rather than vote-buying scum.
Goodpoint. But hey, I guess we don’t really matter. We’re just regular Americans not the sainted Hispanic/Latino wanna-be Americans who will vote as directed.
Hope the “Trump can stop it all if he really wants to” idiots start paying attention to what Trump has to work with....Trump ain’t the problem.
I believe I read that she was a George McGovern supporter in 1972. I guess she switched “Georges” on us.
The “soft-hearted” are really hard-core totalitarians who want to wipe out freedom.
“When exactly did Laura Bush become a leading member of the Republican Party?”
You know, I was asking the exact same thing!
Put the children in prison too.
Exactly. I guess I just dont understand what is happening. Are the kids showing up alone and crossing? Are the parents going to the border and making them cross? I honestly dont see how kids are just materializing on our side of the border and now they are ours. And once they are here, what is expected, just turn them loose, on their own?
