I don't think it is Trump, himself, so much as the times we live in. Back in the Reagan days, the country still had the impression of itself as a conservative, God-fearing country. The leftists hated it, but they were working on "fundamentally" changing the country. They had been patient all the years during the long march through the institutions. After eight years of Obama, they thought they had it. They thought they had won the final battle. Then Trump happened, and here we go moving back to the right, causing leftists' grasp on reality to come crashing down around them. The irrational hatred you see is the wailing and gnashing of a wounded animal.
