Texas Republican Party Endorses Marijuana Decriminalization
Forbes ^ | June 16th, 2018 | Tom Angell

Posted on 06/17/2018 10:35:45 AM PDT by Mariner

Delegates at the Republican Party of Texas convention on Saturday voted to approve platform planks endorsing marijuana decriminalization, medical cannabis and industrial hemp. They are also calling for a change in cannabis's classification by the federal government.

"We support a change in the law to make it a civil, and not a criminal, offense for legal adults only to possess one ounce or less of marijuana for personal use, punishable by a fine of up to $100, but without jail time," reads one of the party's new positions.

"Congress should remove cannabis from the list of Schedule 1," says another.

A third asks lawmakers to expand an existing state law that provides patients with limited access to low-THC medical cannabis extracts so that doctors can "determine the appropriate use of cannabis to certified patients."

And a fourth says industrial hemp is a "a valuable agricultural commodity."

That the official GOP organ in a red state like Texas would voice support for such far-reaching cannabis reforms is the latest sign of how mainstream marijuana has become in American politics.

"It makes you wonder how many children have been molested in the name of your War on Drugs, doesn’t it?

Well I'm sure most opponents of the War on Drugs would simply argue that recreational chemistry should be legal for minors as well as adults.

Besides, if the using students were simply not required to go to school at all, and could just stay home and get high, then kids wouldn't be bringing as much contraband into school, right?

Did not anyone live through the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s and see the destruction that drugs brought?? Were drugs legal then? If not, those days tell us nothing about the wisdom of legalizing.

Just like today they were socially acceptable and generally thought to be harmless. And just like today they took a toll on families, health and society. Why do you think LEFTIES ALWAYS want drugs legalized, available, and socially acceptable? I'll give you a hint. See sentence 2.

Will you be passing the hat for for trying to enforce the War on Pot

That hat has already been passed, but if you want justice then their customers should be the one you ask to pay.

I didn't omit any thing, I ignored it as irrelevant.

“yes, let’s add to the number of impaired drivers.”

Hysterical BS lol!

“I also have never had a beaker of cyanide, but I do know it ‘might’ be a bad choice.”

Let me tell you what cannabis has done for me.

I suffered from debilitating depression & anxiety for many years. I took medicines as prescribed & over a 25 year period, gradually got worse to the point I was being told to seriously consider electro-schok therapy & long term inpatient hospitalization. A dear friend suggested in 2015 I look into medical marijuana. I did some research & after much prayer & discussion with my wife, we decided to give cannabis a shot.

Thanks be to God in Heaven it works for me! By the end of 2015 I was off all anti-depressants. By the end of 2016 I was off all the benzos for anxiety & at the end of 2017 I was off all insomnia meds as well. In the beginning of 2015 I weighed 294 lbs. Today I weigh 195-198 on any given day & I begin every day with a 3 mile walk. I can again experience happiness & joy all because of a wonderful plant Our Heavenly Father gave to us called cannabis.

Bad choice? For you, perhaps. For millions like myself, cannabis has been life saving!

some psycologist's and psychiatrist's have gone on record saying that MJ is in fact a gateway drug.

Ah - "some". What a difference 4 letters make.

Lotta good criminalizing them has done, eh? Legalization will at least reduce profit opportunities for cartels.

Ditto for the bills created by dopers. Glad we could clear that up.

I'm sure you're wrong. I've never seen anyone on FR so argue, and I know my position is the opposite.

But I understand why you'd rather battle straw men than address what has actually been posted.

It's a matter of cultural acceptance which is a result of whoever is most effective in propagating their message. Propaganda increases cultural acceptance and acceptance INCREASES even more when legalization is enacted. Cultural acceptance was high throughout the late 60's, 70's and early 80's. Then the pendulum shifted as people realized how dangerous it had become. Then Ronald Reagan did the RIGHT thing. HE used the bully pulpit to send out a strong message that drug use, including marijuana, was wrong and dangerous.

This was so effective that leftists had to come up with another tactic to peddle their poison. So leftists came up with the tactic of calling smoke marijuana "medicine". They started a public relations campaign and ballot initiatives to dupe enough people into actually believing that smoking marijuana is "medical". OF course once that happened it's actually evolved to the point where altering your mind with ANY drug is not only acceptable but encouraged. We're in a marijuana crisis, opiod crisis and mind altering prescription drug crisis that once again is tearing up the culture that Ronald Reagan re-instated.

People like you are dupes of leftists. You're doing their bidding and helping to destroy American culture and American families.

On the surface it looks like you never dealt with the real issue and instead choose to get high. If that happiness and joy goes away without smoking dope then that happiness and joy isn't genuine joy from God. It's, at best, a modification of your brain through chemistry. God wants us to modify our brains but NOT through chemistry. His spirit and his love are the things he uses. Chemical shortcuts do nothing for building spiritual muscle or spiritual character. If without drugs you're a horrible miserable person then ultimately you're still a horrible miserable person. Only God can make that change permanent.

Then the pendulum shifted as people realized how dangerous it had become.

ROTFL! Marijuana is and always has been less dangerous than alcohol - which nonetheless remains legal, and rightly so since adults must be free to take on whatever dangers they see fit.

They started a public relations campaign and ballot initiatives to dupe enough people into actually believing that smoking marijuana is "medical".

"There is conclusive or substantial evidence that cannabis or cannabinoids are effective:
For the treatment of chronic pain in adults (cannabis) (4-1)
As antiemetics in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (oral cannabinoids) (4-3)
For improving patient-reported multiple sclerosis spasticity symptoms (oral cannabinoids) (4-7a)

"There is moderate evidence that cannabis or cannabinoids are effective for:
Improving short-term sleep outcomes in individuals with sleep disturbance associated with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, and multiple sclerosis (cannabinoids, primarily nabiximols) (4-19)"

God wants us to modify our brains but NOT through chemistry.

So you say there's no such thing as a chemical imbalance in the brain that can be corrected with medicine?

“On the surface it looks like you never dealt with the real issue and instead choose to get high.”

Only according to you, a wanna be authoritarian who, by virtue of leading with a fallacy has proven in the 1st sentence that you have no credibility or anything helpful to add to the discussion. You have no idea or understand of whether my depression was due to a psychical, psychological or environmental reasons. Still, I must thank you for being fallacious up front as it saves me a lot of typing. :)

You do not know the status of my spiritual life & make fallacious assertions as if you did know me lol! Rather than appreciate my thankfulness for being free of depression, anxiety & obesity you instead want to tell me its just about being “high.” SMH.

I feel so sorry for you. I hope you get over yourself one day soon.

I wonder if all the patients in the world taking life saving medicines that modify their brains through chemistry know they are in trouble with God yet? /s

Authoritarian prohibitionists seem to have a lot of problems with honesty & reality, IMO.

And this response shows the dishonesty of the left. Notice that I was specific and said "smoked marijuana".

Only a liar or a fool would deny, after doing the research, that the "medical" marijuana issue was designed only to make smoking pot more socially acceptable. There is plenty of research to show that smoking pot impairs lung function. There is plenty of evidence to show that smoking pot can cause mental issues. There is plenty of issues to show that smoking pot leads to the desire to take other drugs.

You can point to drugs that have been derived from the marijuana plant (maybe three or four?)....but in ALL those cases there are existing drugs that do a much better job. And in (I think) most of those drugs the active ingredient isn't THC, but CBD. And Marinol doesn't even use the marijuana plant...it uses a synthetic THC.

In other words, the usefulness of marijuana for medicine is EXTREMELY limited. Pharmaceutical companies recognize this so they're not doing much research into it. Yet the propaganda you push MISLEADS people into believing that marijuana, ESPECIALLY SMOKED marijuana is the cure for just about anything that ails someone.

People like you are nothing but snake oil salesman. Or shamans in pagan times. People get high and feel good and you declare "See! It's medicine!".

You are like thousands of other people on the internet. You selectively quote certain websites and statements (you either have a cut and paste file that you pull these "facts" from...which unusually originate from some pro-pot website.

IN other words, you spread the propaganda of the left with nary a critical thought in your head. And it's absolutely undeniable that the LEFT has and has always wanted to make drug use prevalent and acceptable. And again it's precisely because the left wants to destroy our country, our families and our lives.

So you say there's no such thing as a chemical imbalance in the brain that can be corrected with medicine?

Any chemical imbalances, or balances,in the brain can be altered through the use of chemistry. That's an established fact.

Sometimes it seems to be a wise course of action. Schizophrenia for example. Whether or not it's a Godly course of action is something we'll find out one day.

But this is where your dishonest position on pot rears in. The vast, vast majority of people who smoke pot do it to get high. That's a fact. IN other words, they use it to UNBALANCE their brain chemistry. The bodies that God gave were designed to have thing in balance. They were also designed to be receptive to God's love and spirit so that we can grow in love and spirituality..in other words to be in tune with God.

Using POT untunes from God. But the devious part of it is that we THINK we're more Godly. Pot generates a FALSE sense of spirituality and love.

Concerning Stickmans use. It reminds me so much of someone being dependent on alcohol to function. I used to be socially shy and extremely anxious in any social situation. But I noticed that when I drank that this anxiety disappeared. Now I could be like Stickman and have a couple of drinks and sure, my anxiety would be a lot less in social situations. But I haven't solved anything at all. I'm masking the real cause of my pain and anxiety...which in almost all cases ends up being fear.

I'm not questioning the salvation of anyone that smokes pot. God has a plan and his desire is that everyone comes to repentance. I used to be a heavy pot smoker. And like stickman I found it almost impossible to operate without it. But that's what pot does. It takes over your brain and actually makes it HARDER to function without it. That's not Godly.
