Tennessee woman says she was racially profiled at Victoria's Secret

MEMPHIS, TENN. — A Tennessee woman said she was handcuffed at a Victoria’s Secret in suburban Memphis on Monday because of her skin color.

Jovita Jones said an employee at Victoria’s Secret in Collierville forgot to remove the censor on a bra she purchased recently at the store. On Monday, she took the bra back to have the censor removed.

"I told her she could keep the bag up there. I was going to go look around the store," Jones said.

As she made her way to the dressing room with new items to purchase, Jones spotted a police officer walking toward her.

"He could have asked, ‘Ma'am, can I search your bag?’ He didn't do any of that. He just came in and (slapped) handcuffs on me. He made up in his mind I was guilty," Jones said.

An employee had called police on Jones, who has no criminal record. The store tried to make things right by offering Jones a $100 gift card, but she was not satisfied.

"I told her a $100 gift card is not going to take back the discrimination, humiliation, defamation that I faced in that store that day," Jones said.

They offered her a gift card so I would presume she was able to prove she had bought the item.

Heck, they could have offered her the gift card in the hopes that it would just shut her up ...

Bra Censor. Wasn't that one of those important jobs back in Ancient Rome?

To: alternatives?

Yes. But it might be that the tag and the credit card receipt could have slightly different numbers and then she would be caught. But good catch on the possibilities

"I’ve never even been close to having an issue like that in a retail store ever."

I take it you're not black?

I bet she could be a linebacker for a football team. I didn't see a picture, but knowing black women most aren't Victoria Secret models. 😀

We all know the only reason a black is ever arrested is because they are black. Simple.

If the sensor was still on the item why didn’t it set the alarm off....on the way out as well as on the way back in?

“You can’t remove it without destroying the garment...”

Happened to me quite a few times when I was a kid because one of my aunts always gave us Christmas gifts with those tags still on. My dad used to get them off with the nail-pulling end of a claw hammer.

Yeah, that’s about what it takes. My problem was always that I had tossed the receipt before realizing that thing was attached.

OK, how do you racially profile a thief? Are their ears extra pointy...jaw too square? Cos it reads to me like the store thought she was a thief (store bad...should have investigate first) and treated her as such.

Nowadays, I have to see pictures for all these “racially profiled” people. Cos, you know..I’m white. Can’t we be profiled too? Equal rights!!! I want my equal rights!

That’s what the persistent beeping noise was? It wasn’t a sensor triggering an alarm, but rather the bra was cussing and getting censored.

“He could have asked, ‘Ma’am, can I search your bag?’ He didn’t do any of that. He just came in and (slapped) handcuffs on me. He made up in his mind I was guilty,” Jones said.

Why would she have any merchandise in a bag that she was taking to the dressing room?

And officers should not be searching anyone’s bags without probable cause.

There are dozens of obvious questions that the author of this article apparently never thought to ask.

Today’s journalists are so stupid. They write articles which leave the reader with more questions than answers.

I’m going to have to censure ALL of you for
A) making fun of the person who wrote the waycist post
B) making fun of the editor
C) not including the bodycam footage of the cop who slapped the cuffs on her. so often, the bodycam explains quite a bit more than the poor poster.

Censure....look THAT u in your Funk and Wagnalls!

Those plastic tags they staple onto clothes so you don’t steal them.

I’ve had it happen to me a number of times. First they are “de-activated”, then the clerk removes the tag.

Sometimes the tag does not come off.

The last time this happened to me, I had purchased a dress at a high end store. I got home and I needed the dress for a special occasion. But the tag was on. So I proceeded to pry it iff .... well, it pops off spilling a good amount of dark purple ink.

I took it back, not in a good mood. My event I needed the dress for ruined ... and the dress I was returning was ruined beyond belief.

I had called the manager of the department store in advance and gave him a piece of my mind. I got my money back.

But, once hey are deactivated, unless they are removed, they remain on your clothes thru security.
