DONALD Trump is not getting the credit he deserves for next weeks summit meeting with North Koreas supreme leader Kim Jong-un, a foreign policy expert has said.
The US President is due to fly to Singapore next week for the historic meeting with Kim, at which the subject of the rogue state relinquishing its arsenal of nuclear weapons is top of the agenda.
Leon V Sigal, director of the Northeast Asia Cooperative Security Project at the Social Science Research Council, said many US media outlets had consistently failed to acknowledgement the significance of Mr Trumps achievement in brokering the talks.
His comments follow Mr Trumps repeated attacks on the US fake news media, and a a tweet yesterday questioning why he was being blasted while he tried to do good for the country.
He tweeted: Isnt it Ironic? Getting ready to go to the G-7 in Canada to fight for our country on Trade (we have the worst trade deals ever made), then off to Singapore to meet with North Korea & the Nuclear Problem...But back home we still have the 13 Angry Democrats pushing the Witch Hunt!
In a blog published on the 38 North website, Mr Sigal said: For months that coverage had all but ignored the possibility of negotiation.
Never mind that the Trump administrations stated policy was maximum pressure and engagement.
Once the possibility of a summit meeting became obvious, the very idea became the object of withering disparagement in the US news media.
Mr Sigal said behind-the-scenes meetings had secured the release of US detainee Otto Warmbier, who was flown back to the US in a coma, and died shortly afterwards, adding that US intelligence officials had been talking to North Korean counterparts for months....

He’s getting a ton of credit so far, but there hasn’t been a result yet. We’ve forgiven an Iran sanctions violator and ignored the rocket man’s offenses all to get to this summit.
If there’s a positive result in terms of a thaw in relations, Trump will go down in history as the president who ended the Korean War. But that has not happened yet.
Name another president who got half this far.
In other news, the sun did rise this morning.
No definite result yet, but Trump has gone farther than anyone in trying to end the NK problem. All these “experts” on MSM are busy saying he’s not doing it the right way. If these guys that have been around for years know the right way, why hasn’t it been done by now?
Just pray for President Trump at this time. God is the watchful eye.
Madeline wants to go so she can dance with Kim II.
In her electric scooter?
There is big money in contacting and supporting our standing forces in Korea. A treaty and withdrawal would cost a lot of people big bucks. That’s my theory anyway.
Poland and the Baltic states want those troops.
Completely agree with you. Trump’s personality somehow was the exact thing that Kim Jong Un needed. It’s hard to project exactly what it was, the threats, the humor, or something internal in NK that Kim needs to make a move for, but Trump absolutely will deserve enormous credit, and the experts will deserve a lot of chagrin. If there’s a positive result.
I give him a ton of credit on this, absolutely. And I was never one of those who wet my pants when Trump was baiting the guy last year.
NK can still pull the rug out. Nobody should be celebrating yet.
“NK can still pull the rug out. Nobody should be celebrating yet.”
Not celebrating just hopeful.
Like when the Berlin wall fell.
“Trumps personality somehow was the exact thing that Kim Jong Un needed. Its hard to project exactly what it was, the threats, the humor, or something internal in NK that Kim needs to make a move for....”
The NORK economy is dependent on China.
Unlike his father Jong Un was educated in Europe and has seen first hand what the world has to offer.
He knows he has drawn the short stick after his father and grandfather devastated the North.
Since he ascended to the top spot he seems to have purged the older hard line military leaders with extreme prejudice.
Anti-aircraft artillery?
Starving dogs?
That sends a message that Dear Leader should not be trifled with.
President Trump is the one world leader who seems to be willing to give Kim Jong Un a more or less clean slate in regards to negotiations.
Even willing to let Kim look like a Big Damn Hero back home. Important for Kim.
All said I am guardedly hopeful.
