Former US attorney says Manafort will likely go to prison Friday

Former U.S. attorney Harry Litman said he expects President Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, to be sent to federal prison by the end of the week.

“Prosecutors hate this, judges hate this and he’s going to have to bring his toothbrush to court on Friday because the statute says, if they find this happened, there’s a presumption that no circumstances exist that will get him safely there for trial,” Litman said Tuesday on MSNBC.

“So there’s the real prospect that he now goes to jail, never to leave even until the end of his sentence.”

Litman's comments follow days after special counsel Robert Mueller said in a court filing that Manafort attempted to tamper with potential witnesses while on pretrial release. Mueller on Monday asked the court to revoke or revise his release conditions in the wake of the court filing.

Litman, who now lectures at the University of California Los Angeles School of Law, condemned Manafort's alleged actions on Tuesday.

"…[T]his is the stupidest thing that a defendant can do, this sort of witness tampering,” he told MSNBC. “He’s looking at being in prison, which is a very sort of focusing event, by Friday,” Litman continued.

There is a hearing in front of a judge who will decided whether he did what Mueller accuses him of and if he did, what the penalty to him will be.

Just glanced through an article linked on Drudge by a Paul Rosenzweig, who says even though he hates Trump and doesn't like Manafort either, he thinks Mueller's evidence of witness tampering is very thin. Almost nonexistent.

He says in the article that the hearing is scheduled for late next week in front of Judge Amy Berman Jackson, not this Friday.

I don’t think you can be stopped from talking with a witness. The prosecution can introduce the evidence at trial if they think it indicates a guilty mind. You can’t make an improper request for a witness to lie, but no one could prepare their case if they can’t talk to witnesses. Unless a court order forbad it.

The commie pigs at The Hill should take a large blunt object - like a backhoe - and shove it up their bunghole sideways.

This new Mime is total BS. Pardons are not what is needed. The remedy would be for Trump to fight back starting last year. Meuller can’t prosecute anyone if he is in prison. Why can’t people get this thru their minds. Sessions has screwed us all by screwing Trump. Even if he acts “Bigly” it is already too late.

It was something to do with something that happened a lot of years ago

Anonymous sources say it had to do when he was in 8th grade and had an overdue library book. Instead of paying the $1.35 over due fee, he bribed the librarian with $.50 to ignore the total fee.........Serious stuff!

This is a disgusting abuse of power by Mueller. A judge needs to step in here and throw out the entire case against him based solely on how they are treating him to try and get him to turn against Trump even though there's nothing to make anyone think he has something. I don't know If he's guilty of any actual crimes or not, but the fact that they are willing to destroy people unless they give this corrupt fishing expedition something on Trump is disgusting. There's nothing to make them believe Trump has done anything wrong to begin with. They have nothing. They are committing far more serious crimes than the crimes they charging guys like Manafort with.

If no one else is going to stop Mueller then Trump has to go to war with him to shut it down and free these political prisoners who's lives are being destroyed by the deep state. We have to stand with Trump and do everything we can to help, but he will have to get more aggressive and take greater risk by stepping up his fight against the corrupt deep state sooner or later. We don't have an unlimited amount of time. There are too many cowardly and/or corrupt republicans who are complicit in covering things up to protect the deep state even if they talk a good game. It's hard to know who's really on our side, but it's obvious there aren't enough willing to fight the deep state tooth and nail at this point.

We’ll see, won’t we?

Manafort didn’t collude with Russia.
Flynn didn’t collude with Russia.
Trump, Jr. didn’t collude with Russia.

Trump didn’t collude with Russia.

Game over.

Former U.S. attorney Harry Litman

Currently somebody with no actual knowledge or inside information about the case. Maybe he's right, maybe he's not.

Manafort was brought into the Trump campaign in March of 1916. His main role was that of "delegate wrangler."

For those that remember, Trump was supposedly in danger of not reaching the necessary 1,237 delegates to secure the nomination. Although he was winning most of the primaries, he was said to be getting outwitted in caucuses by Ted Cruz, who was coming in after the fact and "stealing away" delegates after they were apparently won by Trump. Also, in mid-March, Trump was defeated by John Kasich in the Ohio primary. Although Kasich was otherwise a total non-factor in the race, denying Trump those 66 winner-take-all delegates made the path to 1,237 all the more difficult (at the time).

Following in short order was the Wisconsin primary that Cruz won, earning 36 delegates to Trump's 6. So between Ohio and Wisconsin and the "picking off" of caucus delegates, there was a real fear that Trump would go into the convention without the 1,237, allowing "never-Trumper" Republicans to come up with a compromise candidate in smoke-filled backrooms.

So Manafort was the delegate wrangler. His claim to fame was being the "delegate-hunter" for Jerry Ford in the 1976 campaign - narrowly holding off then upstart Ronald Reagan. Manafort was supposed to know all the inner workings of the labyrinthine nomination process.

And for a while, it worked. After the Wisconsin primary, Trump went on to complete a near sweep of all the remaining delegates and by May 3, Ted Cruz was forced to throw in the towel and then proceeded to throw a succession of hissy fits.

During April, May and June, Manafort could do no wrong. Freepers had a Manafort fan club, constantly posting pictures of him here. I think one picture, they had his head and naked chest mounted on a horse a/la Putin. It was crazy. We really worshipped the guy.

Then during July, the convention itself was somewhat a bust. It lacked the usual punch. The Trump campaign definitely was losing a little momentum. Manafort was giving bad advice and not running the campaign very effectively at all. The culmination was the weekend of August 13. That was the day Trump came to Fairfield, CT on a sweltering hot day to give a rally at the Sacred Heart University. It was 95 degrees outside and no air conditioning inside. The heat inside the auditorium was so tremendous that people started fainting. Poor planning. Not characteristic of Trump at all.

Trump did give a hell of a speech (his very last campaign speech with no teleprompters) but a change needed to get made. Especially when the media started focusing on Manafort's shady Russian dealings (from well before Trump even ran for president). It was that weekend that Trump brought Steve Bannon and Kellyanne Conway on board.

And the rest is history!

But Manafort...I don't think we know the full story on this guy. It's quite possible he was a bad actor. Trump didn't seek this guy out. He came to the campaign and offered his services for free. Did he join the Trump campaign with nefarious intentions?

The charges lodged against him are pretty serious. Yes, all the allegations were from years ago and have absolutely nothing to do with Trump. But with that baggage, he had no business being on the campaign. And I think Trump would have still won the nomination - and the election - anyway.

“Manafort was brought into the Trump campaign in March of 1916.”

I knew Trump had a long term strategy, but I had no idea it was that long.
