Pope Francis grants indulgences for Dublin participants
BBC News ^ | 3 Jun 18 | Mark McCleary

Participants attending the World Meeting of Families in August can be forgiven their sins or help a relative speed through purgatory.

Pope Francis has granted a "plenary indulgence" for those taking part.

In Catholic doctrine an indulgence frees you from being punished for your previously committed sins or it can be passed on to dead relatives to shorten their time in purgatory.

Even those following events on TV and radio can achieve a partial indulgence as long as they recite the Our Father, the Creed and other devout prayers.

Martin Luther's opposition to the sale of indulgences was one of the main causes of the Protestant Reformation in the 16th Century.

The Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary, the Vatican body dealing with forgiveness of sins, said pilgrims would have to attend confession and Mass, pray for the Pope's intentions and participate in some function during the five-day event.

The use of indulgences in Catholicism is a tradition that goes back to the Crusades in the 11th Century.

ALL believers are in a state of grace.

And non-believers are as well.

God sends rain on the just and the unjust.

It's God's grace alone that keeps believers and non-believers from frying in hell at this very moment for their sin.

Catholics have way too many hoops to jump through to get to God.

God made is simple.

Romans 10:9-13 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

The Bible says there are three parts to repentance: (1) contrition, (2) confession, and (3) bringing forth fruits worthy of repentance.

Where is that laid out?

Chapter and verses please.........

Indulgences have nothing to do with the forgiveness of sins. They also have nothing to do with your salvation per se.

Again, then.

What's the point of them at all?

Can’t stand the light of truth shining on your religion’s practices so you make it personal, eh?

Nobody is messing up your religion. It’s in such a state, any change would have to be for the better.

What I wrote is true.

Some, but not all Roman Catholics, believe in the false promises of the apparition claiming to be Mary who has told Roman Catholics:

I offer this quote for your consideration from the Sisters of Carmel [bold emphasis mine]:

In the year 1251, in the town of Aylesford in England, Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock, a Carmelite. She handed him a brown woolen scapular and said, “This shall be a privilege for you and all Carmelites, that anyone dying in this habit shall not suffer eternal fire.” In time, the Church extended this magnificent privilege to all the laity who are willing to be invested in the Brown Scapular of the Carmelites and who perpetually wear it.

The Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel has promised to save those who wear the scapular from the fires of hell; She will also shorten their stay in purgatory if they should pass from this world still owing some debt of punishment.

This promise is found in a Bull of Pope John XXII. The Blessed Virgin appeared to him and, speaking of those who wear the Brown Scapular, said, “I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their death and whomsoever I shall find in purgatory I shall free so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting.”

The Blessed Virgin assigned certain conditions which must be fulfilled:

Wear the Brown Scapular continuously.

Observe chastity according to one’s state in life (married/single).

Recite daily the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin OR Observe the fasts of the Church together with abstaining from meat on Wednesdays and Saturdays OR With permission of a priest, say five decades of Our Lady’s Most Holy Rosary OR With permission of a priest, substitute some other good work.

Pope Benedict XV, the celebrated World War I Pontiff, granted 500 days indulgence for devoutly kissing your scapular.

http://www.sistersofcarmel.com/brown-scapular-information.php

In other words....you gotta work to get out.

You are such a hater.

Most Roman Catholics don't like it when this is presented to the public and they are forced to either agree or disagree with the apparition or the New Testament.

And to be clear...NO WHERE in the New Testament is this wearing a piece of cloth to avoid the hell-fire ever taught. It originated some 1200 years after the New Testament.

Maybe before you flip the Catholic bashing switch; you may consider taking the time to learn what it is that you hate so viscerally! P.S. 'purgation' simply means purification. How can a person who admitted to being sinful (why else would you need a Savior) presume to be sinless before almighty God! Although you might be saved, you are NOT sinless. Signing off...

Perhaps because that is what the New Testament teaches.

9For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,

10and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority; 11and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ;

12having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

13When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,

14having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

Colossians 2:9-14 NASB

In light of some Roman Catholics having a strong dislike for their current pope....would their relatives benefit from this as they don’t recognize the current pope’s authority?

But that's just the part where we ARE in agreement.

"The death of Christ has removed all of our sins."

You believe that? So do I. We agree.

Respectfully....we are not in agreement. For if we were then you wouldn't subscribe to the false doctrine of purgatory and indulgences.

Either our sins or forgiven or they are not. To further clarify, as Paul wrote in Romans 4.

7“BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN,

AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED.

8“BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT.” Romans 4:7-8 NASB

If the Pope really can free everyone from Purgatory, then WHY doesn’t he just do so out of love and mercy!?

QUESTION OF THE YEAR!!!!

Would love to know what the Roman Catholics think about this.

This post should have been designated as a Catholic Caucus. The haters must jump on any opportunity to discredit, misrepresent, ridicule, and HATE Catholics; it has become so tiresome. I bid you all a Blessed evening, I just can't take this crap anymore. One example: post #61 ~ ealgeone wrote: If Roman Catholics believe this, then the concept of purgatory and the indulgences are a false teaching. Proving once again that it is usually the Roman Catholic, though not always, who is the first to resort to the personal attack and/or profanity when their false doctrines are exposed and they cannot defend them.

Perhaps the open forums are not for you. You might be better off spending your time in the caucus threads.

I refuse to read your scurrilous mockeries ever again, yet I know you will continue to reply (to satisfy your immeasurable vanities) but before I read any replies, I first see who sent aforementioned reply.

Stop hating so much. Send your insults to someone else.

Live and let live, okay? If you represent your church is about, that is a poor reflection of your preacher..

Oh but we are sinless in Gods eyes Christ bore our sin and gave us His righteousness When God Looks at one saved by Jesus Christ He sees only Christ’s sinless nature. Our sin has been removed as far as the east is from the west. Romans 8:1 there is therefor then NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. Stop struggling to attain what you never can by your own efforts and bask in the completed work of our Saviour and His perfect love that casts out all fear.

Whoa there, junior.....you initiated this conversation.

If you cannot handle the conversation, and I know we've had some in the past, then don't participate in the open threads.

If you're gonna start off by calling someone a hater as you did then you may expect some pushback.

You've got your shorts in a knot because I called out your behavior.

Live and let live, okay?

I'm fine with that....however, I don't think you are.

But know this...I will continue to compare Roman Catholic doctrines to Scripture and illuminating where they are in contradiction of the Scriptures. If you don't like that, then don't read my posts.

If you represent your church is about, that is a poor reflection of your preacher..

I'm not the one calling people "haters". Perhaps you should look in the mirror. Me thinks you may have committed a mortal sin there.

There is overwhelming evidence in both the OT and the NT for God's justice via temporal punishments. But these punishments don't necessarily mean the person is damned. That seems to be your problem. You seem to be equating condemnation (damnation) with justice (being requited non-eternally for the things we have done.)

Justice (God's utterly fair assignment of temporal consequences) is promised in many Biblical passages, both OT and NT, and it is promised to all. The texts uses words like "anyone," "everyone", "all men", "all the churches", "each of you" .

You notice that, don't you? Even when God is addressing members of His church.

But being punished for our deeds can be temporal; this does not always or necessarily mean that the person is eternally damned.

Job 34:11 (LINK)...For according to a man's deeds, He repays him; according to a man's ways, He brings consequences.

Psalm 62:12b (LINK)...For You repay each man according to his work.

Jeremiah 17:10 (LINK)...I, the LORD, search the heart; I test the mind to reward a man according to his way, by what his deeds deserve.

Matthew 16:27 (LINK)...For the Son of Man will come in His Father’s glory with His angels, and then He will repay each one according to what he has done.

Romans 2:6 (LINK)... God will repay each one according to his deeds.

Col 3:25 (LINK)...Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favoritism.

Revelation 2:23 (LINK)...all the churches will know that I am the One who searches minds and hearts, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

Quite consistent, isn't it?

You must certainly see that justice (being paid back) for deeds is promised to "anyone," "everyone", "all men", "all the churches", "each of you"

It's impossible to call that an unbiblical doctrine.

“This is about rehabbing your soul and restoring the balance of justice.”

Jesus paid it all. There is no debt remaining.

“Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elements of the world, rather than Christ. For the entire fullness of God’s nature dwells bodily in Christ, and you have been filled by him, who is the head over every ruler and authority.

You were also circumcised in him with a circumcision not done with hands, by putting off the body of flesh, in the circumcision of Christ, when you were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.

And when you were dead in trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, he made you alive with him and forgave us all our trespasses. He erased the certificate of debt, with its obligations, that was against us and opposed to us, and has taken it away by nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and disgraced them publicly; he triumphed over them in him.” - Colossians 1

“The Bible says there are three parts to repentance: (1) contrition, (2) confession, and (3) bringing forth fruits worthy of repentance.”

I’d love to see WHERE the Bible says that!

“It is true that sorrow from sin is not repentance. Judas felt remorse, but he didn’t repent (Matt. 27:3). Repentance is not just a resolve to do better; everyone who has ever made New Year’s resolutions knows how easily human determination can be broken. Repentance certainly is not penance, an activity performed to try to atone for one’s own sins.

But neither is repentance a solely intellectual issue. Surely even Judas changed his mind; what he didn’t do was turn from his sin and throw himself on the Lord for mercy. Repentance is not just a change of mind; it is a change of heart. It is a spiritual turning, a total about-face. Repentance in the context of the new birth means turning from sin to the Savior. It is an inward response, not external activity, but its fruit will be evident in the true believer’s behavior (Luke 3:8).”

https://www.gty.org/library/articles/A330/what-is-biblical-repentance

Repentance will lead to good works, eventually, but good works are NOT part of repentance. From the same link:

“It is the attitude of the publican who, fearful of even looking toward heaven, smote his breast and cried, “God, be merciful to me, the sinner!” (Luke 18:13). Repentance is not merely behavior reform. But because true repentance involves a change of heart and purpose, it inevitably results in a change of behavior.”

The very concept of indulgences degrades and negates the sacrifice of Jesus. As Paul rebuked Peter:

“We are Jews by birth and not “Gentile sinners,” and yet because we know that a person is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we ourselves have believed in Christ Jesus. This was so that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no human being will be justified...I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.”

If I need to do good deeds to be forgiven, “then Christ died for nothing.” “[Christ] made you alive with him and forgave us all our trespasses. He erased the certificate of debt...and has taken it away by nailing it to the cross.”

It is finished!
