Participants attending the World Meeting of Families in August can be forgiven their sins or help a relative speed through purgatory.
Pope Francis has granted a "plenary indulgence" for those taking part.
In Catholic doctrine an indulgence frees you from being punished for your previously committed sins or it can be passed on to dead relatives to shorten their time in purgatory.
Even those following events on TV and radio can achieve a partial indulgence as long as they recite the Our Father, the Creed and other devout prayers.
Martin Luther's opposition to the sale of indulgences was one of the main causes of the Protestant Reformation in the 16th Century.
The Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary, the Vatican body dealing with forgiveness of sins, said pilgrims would have to attend confession and Mass, pray for the Pope's intentions and participate in some function during the five-day event.
The use of indulgences in Catholicism is a tradition that goes back to the Crusades in the 11th Century.

Its stomach churning.
One more time! STOP TROLLING ME!
You make it sound as if indulgences is in the Bible. It is not. It was first invented by Pope Urban II around 1099 to encourage people to fight in the Crusades. As all false doctrine, it reached the pinnacle of corruption when Pope Leo needed funds to pay for the Vatican.
What you neglect in your theology is that ANY fruit that we bring forth (part 3), is solely because of the work of Christ in us. He is the vine. We are the branches. Without Him we can do nothing. There IS no good work that we can do apart from Christ. Indulgences is a heretical doctrine and takes away from the work of Christ and the working of the Holy Spirit.
Uh, yeah.......
Who needs Jesus when you have Mary?
You keep responding and accusing him falsely of not answering.
If you respond, he is entitled to answer back. That is not trolling.
Perhaps open RF threads are not for you. The caucus designation may be better if you need a safe place to comment.
Why don't you just drop it?

When a FRiend is being attacked, I’m not going to sit by and watch it happen, so yes, it is my business. I am my brother’s keeper.
Brown Deers question is akin to the *Have you stopped beating your wife yet?* kind of question.
There is no way to answer it with a yes or no answer, so your request for clarification was perfectly reasonable.
(Disclaimer: Courtesy ping to someone mentioned in the post as per FR protocol as if I do ping the person, I’ll get blasted, and if I don’t ping someone I’m talking about, I’ll get blasted. It’s a lose/lose situation.)
The idea is there in embryo, without being fully defined, much like the doctrine of the Trinity, the Eschaton, and even the clear-cut Table of Contents of the Canonical collection of the Bible itself.
As for purgatory, I said, not that it is explicitly named, proved, and fully defined, but that it is consistent with what the Bible teaches about three things:
This requiting, refining, and effective spiritual sharing is all about how He deals --- not with the lost souls, the damned--- but with His children -- according to Scripture. In God's great mercy, I hope that's every one of us.
This is very similar to the Immaculate Conception. There isn't a single bit of Scripture to support the IC, yet Roman Catholics continue to do so.
You're now admitting about indulgences and purgatory what Christians have said about them all long....they're not supported in Scripture.
To "see" this in the NT you have to practice eisegesis.....reading something into the text that isn't there.
And then you resort to a pitiful Tim Staples apologetic and not the Table of Contents isn't proved in the Bible.
When the Roman Catholic trots that line out, they've completely lost the argument.
The doctrine WAS handled corruptly at the time (11th century). It was simony, "money for spiritual good," always known as a sin. You won't find any Catholic today that denies that simony is wrong, neither Tetzel nor the simoniacal popes were saints, and (on the topic of simony) Luther was certainly right.
What we affirm in our theology is that ANY fruit that we bring forth, is solely because of the work of Christ in us. He is the vine. We are the branches. Without Him we can do nothing. There IS no good work that we can do apart from Christ.
Correctly understood, "Indulgences" is not a heretical doctrine because it does not take away from the work of Christ and the working of the Holy Spirit. On the contrary, it shows how God has graciously accomplished it all in His Mystical Body, in which we are joined to Him and members of one another.
Actually it does because by it's very existence, it states that the blood of Christ is NOT enough to cleanse us from ALL our sins, as Scripture clearly and concisely states.
Well, yes it does.
Roman Catholicism is trying to say our puny, worthless deeds, are somehow enough to equal the shed blood of Christ Who died for ALL of our sins.
The whole indulgence concept flies against the testimony of Scripture.
AND YOU NEED TO MIND YOUR BUSINESS!

*Have you stopped beating your wife yet?*
The idea is there in embryo
Never found in the NT.
Never taught by an Apostle.
Totally pagan.
Yet you try to defend it by spinning.
The doctrine WAS handled corruptly at the time (11th century). It was simony, “money for spiritual good,” always known as a sin.
It was a false doctrine and USED BY THE VATICAN and other church leaders to raise money.
BOTH are wrong today as much as then.
Heck, Rome split the church rather than admitting it was wrong and going back to truth. They did not care about truth.
And here you find yourself posting a defense today of a false teaching
*Have you stopped beating your wife yet?*
Never did. Never will. Never would.
See how easy it is to answer a question simply?
Lets see you do it!
