Yep. I have a Saiga rifle made in the same factory at Izhevsk where Mikhail Kalashnikov worked. Its a semiautomatic and therefore not an AK-47. It would be very effective for home defense though.

I wish I had the link, but there was a great vid of Marines or Army shooting up some typical US construction. Theyd escalate from siding/drywall, to brick plus drywall, to block plus drywall. None of it was stopping rifle rounds. I don't know what they were shooting the exterior of his house with, but it looked like they didn't penetrate.
