“South Korea isn’t going to join a plan that would turn it into a brutal dictatorship.”

I think you need to get an education on the political background of Moon, and many in his administration, which includes memberships which they are unapologetic about, in political organizations said to be “favorable” to North Korea. Some known to be directly influenced by the North in their political agendas. Some are just naive and see in the Northern leaders a kind of “pride in the fatherland” (in a Korean history context) that they see missing in the leaders favored by the west in South Korea. Some are openly Communist.

There are Conservatives in South Korea that believe the “scandal” against the prior president of South Korea was a manipulated event and that Moon, and “grass roots” organizations (Leftist labor unions included) had millions of dollars in “foreign” support for his election. Of course like in the U.S. it never hurts to run as a Leftist as most of the media will happily link arms with you.

That is just a hit of Trump’s “partner” in South Korea right now.

Wuli, South Korea is a Capitalist society. It’s an elected government that answers to it’s people. Are there Leftists there that would love to turn the whole of Korea into another Leftist nirvana, perhaps so. I do not think the South Koreans want to adopt a totalitarian model. They may sucker for the nincompoop like Moon, but when push comes to shove, I don’t think they’re going to sit still and watch their freedoms destroyed. I don’t think the people of the North would be happy about that either, after putting up with Kim and his dad after so many decades.

“They are trying to weave a restoration of Korea, vs a North and South.” ...Nobody said it would be easy, but if there is a rejoining, there would be no Northern leadership to develop and use nukes against anyone.”

I don’t know what “they” YOU are talking about, but if Moon thinks HE is going home with a political merger with North Korea in hand as some sort of temporary “confederation” with a timeline for full union, and the political opening in the South to the political party of the north, then the naive Moon is in for a shock when open rebellion opens up in the South.

Any union of any kind that fails to be first preceded by a timeline of full political reform in the North, and the internal dropping of the authoritarian government norms, political monopoly, suppressing of news and information, restrictions on travel (North Koreans will flood into the south leaving not enough workers there). Far too many South Koreans, particularly in the military are not going to along with merger in any way (have themselves politically compromised by) an unreformed North Korea.

Some people knowing little of Koreans have fantasy’s in there heads about what kind of agreements are possible with the dictators in North Korea. It is not a matter of what THEY want, it’s a matter of what they - the dictators - are NOT willing to be.

I don’t deny there are competing forces at work here, and we’re not going to side with the worst of them.

There have been talks before. They always fell out.

Trump is trying to keep things on track. We’ll see how it goes.

I can’t deny there could be problems here. We’re in agreement on that. The South needs to keep it’s head and avoid bad deals.

As for the North’s leadership, they should thank their lucky stars if the worst that comes out of this is that they have to operate as an opposition party in the unified nation, and they aren’t prosecuted for crimes against humanity.

Kind of a low bar Kim is setting for himself.

I expect Trump will instill a little higher vision for NK’s future than that.
All he has to do is point to South Korea.
