Spanish, not English, is the most all-American language and has been for centuries

Is it dangerous to speak Spanish in public in Trump's America? Well, sí! Just this month, we've seen a lawyer threaten to call ICE after he overheard people in a restaurant in Manhattan speak in Spanish, and a Border Patrol agent in Montana detain two Mexican-American women for 40 minutes because he heard the bilingual women chatting en español, because the language “is very unheard of up here,” according to la migra man.

Is America a geographic region, or a political-historical entity? The kind of sloppy thinking evinced by writing such as this is disheartening.

>> Just re-read your history books. Spaniards had already established vibrant colonies from St. Augustine to Santa Fe by the time the English set up Jamestown in 1607. Previous generations of Americans knew to learn at least some Spanish when they moved into what’s now the Southwest United States, when it was still part of Mexico. And the lingo of the most American icon of them all, the cowboy, is mucho mucho with Spanish roots, from buckaroo (from vaquero— cowboy) to vamoose (from “vamos”—let’s go) to that most red-blooded car of them all, the Mustang (from the Spanish word for stray animals). And what language do you think the names of red states like Colorado, Florida, Montana and Nevada come from? <<

So wait, are they a dominant culture of the United States since Europeans first arrived here, or a marginalized oppressed minority group? Make up your minds, leftists.

Spanish is spoken mostly because it’s an easy language, bereft of most of the nuances and complexities of English and French. People who come here from Spanish speaking countries continue to speak it because they’re too lazy to learn English and the culture does not make doing so necessary to their survival.

70 years ago, Milwaukee, Wisconsin had signs in store windows “English spoken here” - else it was German.

tough..... to say, but the Great Southwest was predominantly Indian Language groups, Ute, Navajo, Apache,....and sometimes they didn’t speak Spanish. I would thing the 2nd language after English spoken in the USA was German. All over America there were German settlements, and in the north, it was Swedish and Norwegians. All of them quickly, including the Irish and Italian adapted to their new homeland and learned English. Wonder why it has taken SO LONG for the people in the southern parts of Texas to catch on. Visit Laredo, Texas and see the vast majority of people speak Spanish.

"Spanish was spoken in Kali, Texas, and Florida. That’s about it. The rest was English. "

Uh, no. French was well in the mix in that time frame. The territory that became the "Louisiana Purchase" and just about doubled the size of the United States was French.

That said, ENGLISH is and should be the official legal language of the US, and if you plan to live here, you need to speak it.

Uh, yes.

Your confusing territory with inhabited. Back then, many countries claimed territory it never occupied.
