THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
JEROME KERN
SHOW BOAT: MAKE BELIEVE
This is very early Bing before he became Americas favorite baritone crooner. Its from 1928 when he worked for Paul Whiteman, the man who made a lady out of jazz. In those days, Bing and Bix Beiderbecke would hold marathon drinking bouts until all hours, and Bing was a real badass, a genuine brawler. He was also a borderline tenor, not having settled on a vocal range.
Note that this is an electric recording, where the string bass can finally be heard, although it is still being backed by a tuba.
Whiteman in his final years in the Sixties would become an ardent fan of rock and roll.

Thanks for the great Patriotic tunes Kathy, as we remember and honor America’s fallen Heroes this Memorial Day weekend.
