My father is Black, and my mother is Puerto Rican. As a biracial woman, I'm very familiar with questions like, "What are you?" "But what do you consider yourself?" and insinuations of "But is she really Black?" And as much as I wish I could say this type of thinking was unique to my childhood or some less-progressive era long ago, it's something I still deal with today. Yup, in 2018. For some people, regardless of their race (and sometimes even my own friends and family) it's apparently very difficult to understand the concept that a person can proudly embrace and claim two cultures and races with open arms. But obviously, I love both of my parents equally. How could I ever be expected to choose one side or the other? How can anyone expect a person of mixed descent to simply pick or try to dictate what their identity is for them?
Meghan Markle is not a stranger to this narrative. The daughter of a white father and a Black mother, she has spoken and even written about the complications that have come with her racial ambiguity. In a poignant essay for Elle UK in 2015 (a year before she began dating Prince Harry), she wrote: "Being biracial paints a blurred line that is equal parts staggering and illuminating." Her race has also has been at the center of the conversation surrounding her entry into the royal family, to the point where Prince Harry had to release a statement asking the media to back off. Even in her engagement interview with BBC which should have been about nothing but her newfound happiness Markle had to address the attention on her race, calling it "disheartening" and "a shame."

I do agree about many hot chicks being shallow bitches. Every once in a while you can find a unicorn though...
I will be surprised if she does not tire of needy, immature Harry and become bored with him very quickly.
Apparently the author hangs out with a lot of Liberals. Personally, I don’t know ANYBODY who would ask someone an idiotic and asinine question like those that she mentioned.
To be perfectly honest, I did not know that Meghan Markle was “black”. Nor, do I care, now that I have heard that totally irrelevant “fact”.
Someone needs to get a life.
Being proud of one’s race is irrational on the face of it. Achievements and accomplishments are the only things one can rationally take pride in as they are earned. Race is unearned-—you didn’t have a choice, and it took no effort.
Too funny
This is stupid. Markle will now have exactly NO control over anything regarding the royal family. Harry is not in the line of succession unless Williams entire family perishes in a tragedy. She may be seen, but for the rest of her official life, Markle will do as she is told. So much for an empowering powerful woman.
D’oh!
:-)
I used to believe that there were only two races. Human. NASCAR.
The France Family ruined NASCAR for me, so now I only believe in one.
You noticed that too? Its like author was biting at the bit for blackness to take over the wedding. There is a lack of sensitivity towards whites as well. I wonder how sensitive Markle is to that side of her?
This whole affair stinks to high heaven.
I recall the first time I saw the photo of the two on some web site. At the time I had no idea who either one was but the thought came to me that the guy could do a lot better than her.
When I read who he was, I did remember seeing him before. Then I read that she was Black. No way. She might be 1/16th Black, certainly no more than 1/8th. She really doesn’t look Black at all.
I do know that in my somewhat suspicious mind, that as soon as I saw the Black statement, I knew what was going on and it continued just as my suspicions had predicted.
The whole thing was a showpiece to how great it is to Marry a Black person when you are White. Also to show the world how open minded the British Royalty are.
Does anyone in their right mind think that is the best he could do?
Its all about the color not the content, so sick of this bull
The reception had pigs knuckles, fried chicken, and watermelon.
I'm gonna get banned from FR after 11 years for this one but I couldn't resist. I am so fed up with this black crud so I will now use sarcasm even more.
All thanks to LBJ and his Great Society.
Who is she?
Megan Markle “made the wedding black” because it helped the institution of the Monarchy to do so. The western world’s obsession with “equality” has imperiled the Monarchy. Who were the first Americans that Prince William and his wife, Kate, met with when they visited the USA? Jay-Zee and Beyonce. Megan Markle is about as culturally black as Marie Osmond, yet her being part Black will be all you hear about for the rest of this marriage.
Cressida Bonas, Harry’s ex girlfriend.
Be fair. The whole culture is race-obsessed. Megan Markle would not have been able to change that. She wanted to marry this guy â can’t fault her for that, as no one expects the rest of us to account for our yens â so she had to play ball.
