New bill named after Oakland mayor who tipped illegal immigrants to ICE sweep
Tipping illegal immigrants off to a looming immigration sweep could net sanctuary city leaders jail time, under a new bill announced Monday by Rep. Steve King.
The Iowa Republican dubbed the bill the Mayor Libby Schaaf Act, after the Oakland mayor who alerted Californias bay area to an impending sweep earlier this year, in a move that immigration officials said helped hundreds of people escape detection.

Mayor Libby, you’re famous now. There going to be a new law named after you! Hang this thing around her neck like a brightly colored millstone.
It’s about time this Republic cracks down on state politicians and judges who decide they have power over the Federal Executive Branch.
I actually have a problem with this. It is an attempt to censor speech and in my opinion, a violation the 1st amendment. If the Feds don’t want the information to get out ... don’t share it with those you dont trust i.e. local law enforcement.
There’s already laws that cover this. As long as Rip Van Sessions is in there it doesn’t make any difference anyhow.
I have a problem with this too.
Five years isn't nearly enough time.
Although different scholars view unprotected speech in different ways, there are basically nine categories:
Obscenity
Fighting words
Defamation (including libel and slander)
Child pornography
Perjury
Blackmail
Incitement to imminent lawless action
True threats
Solicitations to commit crimes
Some experts also would add treason, if committed verbally, to that list. Plagiarism of copyrighted material is also not protected. Category: Freedom of Speech https://www.freedomforuminstitute.org/about/faq/which-types-of-speech-are-not-protected-by-the-first-amendment/
I don’t know, according to Steve King whether existing law covers this is up for debate.
I looked up once. There is existing law and it is pretty harsh. Adding another law that is very, very clear can’t hurt, but is more political maneuvering (in this case good maneuvering). If memory serves. It gets very harsh if someone dies because the illegal was protected illegally.
Thanks, that’s good to know and it’s good the penalty can be harsh.
It seems like sort of the same thing as the lookout for bank robbers. I can’t believe there are no laws against tipping off criminals of impending police activity.

Support Free Republic, Folks!

10 years at a minimum. 15 or 20 years sounds about right.
Agreed, check post #9.
It doesnt fall under Free Speach. It is aiding and abetting criminals. If I see cops coming into a drug neighborhood and drive around warning the dealers on the corner, is that Free Speach? If Im a government official and I learn of a pending drug raid and warn the targets, is that Free Speach?
“Theres already laws that cover this. As long as Rip Van Sessions is in there it doesnt make any difference anyhow.”
Yeah, and there’s a little matter of enforcement! I am sure there are already enough applicable laws on the books.

I get the feeling this bill is more about making a statement of this Mayor’s wrongdoing than creating a law specifically for this crime when already have other laws that cover helping criminals escape justice.
I rhetorically ask why aren’t they being enforced AG Sessions?
