BERLIN - Since Jan. 20, 2017, European leaders have managed U.S. relations with one eye on the clock, anxiously counting down the hours until President Donald Trumps term is up and hoping the core of the Western alliance isnt too badly damaged in the meantime.
But as Trumps aggressive rhetoric toward Americas closest allies has evolved into hostile action this spring, a new fear has swept European capitals.
Trump may not be an aberration that can be waited out, with his successor likely to push reset after four or eight years of fraught ties. Instead, the blend of unilateralism, nationalism and protectionism Trump embodies may be the new American normal.
It is dawning on a number of European players that Trump may not be an outlier, said Josef Janning, head of the Berlin office of the European Council on Foreign Relations. More and more people are seeing it as a larger change in the United States.
Even before Trump was elected, Europeans sensed that Washingtons traditional role as guarantor of the continents security and stability was slipping away, and that post-World War II ties were fading along with the generations that forged them....

Yup. And its going to get nasty.
GDPR is intentionally written in a way it CANNOT be complied with. This is economic warfare by Brussels against the US, plain and simple.
So pull our troops out, tell them to go screw, and let the chips fall where they may.
BtW by them, I obviously dont mean our troops. I mean Germany, France, and the other EU nations.
“So pull our troops out”

If this reflects general opinion in Europe, they have a skewed way of thinking. They should consider how they have contribued to their own lostness, beginning in August, 1914, if not before, and how their own policies — foreign and domestic — in recent decades have eaten away at what was left of a once-great civilization.
If I recall correctly, we bailed them out twice last century from their own ideological and political disasters. We rebuilt the West with the Marshall Plan. We have paid for most of their military security for over seventy years. We prevailed in the Cold War, leading to the collapse of the Soviet Union and its hegemony over the East, and giving the East a chance at freedom. And they whine about how they are afraid that we’re done saving them.
Maybe we once were lost, but now we’re found.
Oh — Europeans — if you are counting the days until the end of the Trump presidency,it will be, God willing, on January 20, 2025.
America is on the rebound; it’s Europe that appears lost for good.
I’m in favor of bombing the racists and Nazis in Brussels.
If you mean the America that values personal Freedom and Liberty... it don't.

Screw you, Europe. YOURE the ones who flushed your own cultures down the toilet.
Even the British are hoping Meghan Miracle will appease the dangerous forces of their culture shift.
“Europe wonders if America is lost for good”
Get back to us in 40 years when your men spend half the day with their butts in the air and your women are in burkas.
IIRC we had to lead from behind in Libya because they didnt even have refueling capability for their planes.
I think Europe set the tone when they established the European Union as a semi dictatorship/socialistic government.
Unfortunately you are correct. I was stationed in Germany in the 80's and remember all the wonderful towns, especially the beautiful train station in Munich. A friend went thru there a couple of months ago and sent me some pictures. He said it looks like a homeless shelter for Muslims and he was right.
“But as Trumps aggressive rhetoric toward Americas closest allies has evolved into hostile action this spring, a new fear has swept European capitals.”
What the...? This is insane writing.
The Crown Prince of SA is right about that - as an advocate, he would know.
You need to do some homework.
