Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Saturday said Republican lawmakers efforts to uncover the identity of an FBI informant in order to obstruct special counsel Robert Muellers investigation comes close to "crossing a legal line."
Schumer was tweeting his support of a statement from the Senate Intelligence Committee's top Democrat, Mark Warner (Va.), who warned Republican lawmakers against exposing the identity of the informant who gave investigators information about possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Warner said in a separate Twitter thread on Friday, "It would be at best irresponsible, and at worst potentially illegal, for members of Congress to use their positions to learn the identity of an FBI source for the purpose of undermining the ongoing investigation into Russian interference in our election."
Exposing sources makes it that much harder for every part of the intelligence community to gather intelligence on those who wish to do us harm, Warner wrote.
The next day, Schumer said Warner's statement was "on the money" and serves as a severe warning to GOP representatives who are trying to tamper with the investigation.
Schumer and Warners comments come after a report from the Washington Post alleged President Trump had begun a campaign to expose the role of the informant.
The New York Times reported last week that an FBI informant met with two former Trump campaign advisers, George Papadopoulos and Carter Page.
The Justice Department (DOJ) denied a request earlier this month from House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) for details related to the source. DOJ said that releasing such information would put lives at risk and endanger national security.

Congress OVERSEES the FBI
Congress can see WHATEVER it wants.
A Democrat worried about crossing a legal line. HA HA HA HA
Oh yeah without a doubt....(sarcasm off)
Their sense of right and wrong is seriously warped.
Chuck Schumer belongs in prison, too.
He sounds a little worried they’re getting too close to the criminal enterprise known as the DNC.
‘Im surprised the rats dont tell the GOP who the spy is and then tell them if you leak it you get a nice jail sentence. Then the DOJ can arrest all the GOP who knew.’
Haha! Sessions’—I mean, Rosenstein’s—DOJ will get right on it.
Wait a minute. Are they now claiming the executive branch secretly inserting spies into the opposition party’s presidential campaign crosses no legal lines? What was all the Watergate hubbub about then?
All Trump has to say is “You know there was something about......I never really trusted him.” Mueller’s investigation would then collapse.
Chuckles the Clown should be raising hell with the NYT and Washington Compost for printing and the DOJ/FBI for leaking the info that outed Stefan Halper!
But that is not his motive. He is attempting to divert the attention from the Seditious Bastards.
The dems are pretty worried about this becoming public. Must be big.
Schumer, you idiot, it is the DOJ that is crossing the line
by leaking the details.
Go talk to your boy Jeff.
So, if the Trump Administration identifies the spy, the Dems will charge Trump with obstruction of justice.
The “Source” participated in criminal activity.
He is now fair game.
Fair game for a Grand Jury.
Fair game for an indictment.
Fair game for a prison sentence or hanging.
Getting over target always brings out the most flak.
Nunes could start threatening obstruction charges for those preventing Congress from performing oversight
Fresh off of defending MS-13, Senator Schumer is defending a coup against the President.
You can smell the flop sweat.
Schumer and Warner sound more like co-conspirators than public officials defending the Constitution.
They are trying to create another Plame Gate.
Eeeeeeeeeexcellent! As long as it doesn't actually cross the line it's all good. Carry on with the uncovering.
Or should we call in Susan Rice to help pull the mask off the informant?
