I thought the Death of Captain Marvel was the big multiyear multiseries crossover that ran forever as the Kree/Skrull war, Thanos, all that, culminating in the mid 80s with Marvel’s first graphic novel.
Something that had more going for it than a Dragonball,Sonic the Hedgehog, Pokemon plot about collecting 5 different colored powerful stones.

Ouch. That was a harsh subtle rebuke to one of the most popular movies of all time. I saw Avengers Infinity War Friday. In 3D IMAX it was a lot of fun, but your characterization of the movie wasn’t far off. It was cluttered, so full of heroes, few got to shine. Actually, only one: Thor. He was great. Hulk was non-existent (a big disappointment) and so many heroes were turned to dust that you know will be brought back to life in Avengers 4. It makes the whole story almost meaningless in my fanboy mind, but I’m hopeful all will made right a year from now.
That Capt. Marvel (not to be confused with Fawcett’s Capt Marvel now known as Shazam) started in the 60s and eventually did die in the GN you mentioned.
Carol Danvers was originally a friend of that guy. Then became Ms Marvel (70s) after the male Capt. Marvel died, she took on the name Binary for a short stint in the 80s, then as Warbird in the late 90s, before finally retaking the title Captain Marvel in 2012.
Between Ms Marvel and resuming the title Captain Marvel there was another character named Monica Rambeau who was known as Capt Marvel but had different powers. Black Police woman from New Orleans wore a white and black costume.
Genis-Vell and his sister Phyla-Vell, Khn’nr, and Noh-Varr also held the title through the 90s and 2000s before Carol claimed it in 2012.
Mess of a history.
