Immigration crackdown shifts to employers as audits surge

Immigration officials have sharply increased audits of companies to verify that their employees are authorized to work in the country, signaling the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration is reaching deeper into the workplace to create a “culture of compliance” among employers who rely on immigrant labor.

Expansive plans also have been drafted for a long-term push to scrutinize employers’ hiring practices more closely.

Under a 1986 federal law, companies must verify their employees are authorized to work in the United States by reviewing their documents and verifying to the government the employees’ identity and work authorization. If employers are found to hire someone without proper documents, the employers may be subject to administrative fines and, in some cases, criminal prosecution.

The recent focus on employers comes after a surge of deportation arrests of workers that started immediately after Trump took office in January 2017. The crackdown is likely to please immigration hawks among Trump’s supporters but may alienate industries and companies that rely on immigrant labor.

It's amazing how the MSM can never figure out the difference between immigrants and illegal aliens.

I think it is a good idea for immigration officials to crack down on employers who hire illegal aliens. Lower demand will lead to fewer illegal aliens.

I think it is sad and disgusting that the Seattle Times is unable to distinguish between “immigrants” and “illegal aliens”.

Maybe they're too stupid to figure out the difference...

to create a “culture of compliance”

Pretty sure that's a good thing.

The crackdown is likely to please immigration hawks among Trump’s supporters but may alienate industries and companies that rely on immigrant labor.

If a company or industry relies on labor from legal immigrants then they are in compliance with the law and there is no reason this crackdown should "alienate" them.

If a company or industry "relies" on labor from illegal aliens then they are knowingly in flagrant violation of our the laws, and no one should give even two-thirds of a rat's a$$ whether or not the crackdown alienates them.

Once one company does it, all the companies have to follow in order to remain competitive. I know a landscaper who only hires American and legal immigrant workers. He told me he has a difficult time because too many other companies are able to undercut him with their illegal alien workers.

This is the key.
Make the illegal aliens unemployable.
They will have more incentive to go home.

It is deliberate propaganda.
Conflating illegal aliens with immigrants is insulting to immigrants, ask one.

I agree.

The US Chamber of Commerce is a supporter of low paid employees (read that : illegals paid under the table). So let's hit them where the problem starts - in businesses who hire illegals.

There are already established processes to vet employees citizenship status. Use 'em!

Jail a few of them for 90 days where the cases are egregious and watch the rest of them crawl into their shells.

Fines are just a cost of doing business, but jail time? “O Dear, what will they think of me at the club?”

Considering it is the LAW that you are legal to work, this should be a no brainer.
Unless of course you have been lying to the Federal Gov....

I worked in a place, several years ago, won’t say where or when, that hired illegals. They applied for work and had a social security card, so was hard to tell who was legal and who was illegal when they present cards. Even back then, however, gov’t would send a letter to identify people who were using other peoples’ social security numbers and you could terminate them.

Yet ANOTHER abscond of govt: ‘income’ taxes, ‘h’care’, now status. What ELSE will govt foist upon their favorite scapegoat (biz/employers) for their lack of work/enforcement of Law?

Here’s an EASY, no cost, CONSTITUTIONAL, fix
1) Terminate any/all welfare.
2) Enforce the EXISTING Law.
3) English as the official language of the land.

Biz isn’t in the biz, nor should it care, of doing govt’s J-O-B.

Sorry folks, but the (R)N(C) want their cake too. Free Citizens don’t need govt permission to work (but ‘illegals’ need be weeded out). No govt authority for min wage\true min. wage is $0 (but ‘illegals’ need to be weeded out).

I have yet to hear any plan that upholds the Const., while supporting the rest of the ‘wish list’. The only one(s) getting it in the middle (the shaft) are the Citizens\tax-payers.

There are idiot and asinine Judges, politicians, scumbag agitators and “Constitutional Scholars” who proclaim that illegal aliens have Constitutional rights. With that argument, the left easily deludes themselves and the American public.

And at the same time the welfare agencies need to be cracking down on able-bodied individuals who are receiving benefits. Boot them off as there are plenty of jobs available.
