WASHINGTON (AP) -- A White House official dismissed a view expressed by Sen. John McCain about President Donald Trump's CIA nominee, saying Thursday at a staff meeting that "it doesn't matter" because "he's dying anyway," two people in the room told The Associated Press.
Kelly Sadler was discussing McCain's opposition to Trump's pick for CIA director, Gina Haspel, when she made the comment, according to the two people, who described feeling shocked and stunned by the remark. They spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity to discuss the closed-door communications staff meeting.
The White House did not dispute the remark. In a statement, they said, "We respect Senator McCain's service to our nation and he and his family are in our prayers during this difficult time."
The Hill newspaper first reported the comment.
The 81-year-old Arizona Republican, who has spent three decades in the Senate, was diagnosed in July with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer. He left Washington in December and underwent surgery last month for an infection.
Sadler is a special assistant to the president. She did not respond to a request for comment Thursday evening.
McCain's wife, Cindy, responded with a tweet tagged to Sadler, "May I remind you my husband has a family, 7 children and 5 grandchildren."

>>This kind of thing blemishes what should’ve been one of the most victorious days so far in President Trump’s time in office.<<
Only in the minds of morons.
>> Thank you for pointing out that some things go beyond politics and death is one of them. Regrettably, someFReepers are classless as well.<<
Virtue signaling is what is classless, and also very difficult to camouflage.
>>Any time you have two women in the same office, that is one too many.<<
Sometimes it’s two too many!
What free speech rights at ones place of employment? There are none. Especially in the WH, there should be a high standard of professionalism. This administration is supposed to be draining the swamp. It can’t succeed if it gives the haters unnecessary ammo such as this.
It blemishes the day because it gives the media and the leakers something negative to talk about instead of all of the positive accomplishment. “Moronic” is not recognizing that.
If she said it good! If McCain wants to turn his funeral into a political snit-fest, then he should expect comments like this.
>>It blemishes the day because it gives the media and the leakers something negative to talk about instead of all of the positive accomplishment. Moronic is not recognizing that.<<
Your response regarding this trivia is EXACTLY the response the leakers were confident they would invoke by leaking this nonsense. In other words, you epitomize their success.
>> This administration is supposed to be draining the swamp.<<
Actually the “offensive” comments may have been made with that very objective in mind, i.e., for the express purpose of exposing the leakers.
I don’t “epitomize their success”. (ie: the leakers) I bemoan that there are those in the inner circle gave the coup something to distract from all of President Trump’s accomplishments last week.
re: was this an attempt to expose the leakers. I don’t think so. It gave the haters a chance to elevate John McCain. The staff shouldn’t have to be told, but they do. Just shut up about him until he meets his fate in the afterlife.
