A.G. Schneiderman Announces Agreement with the Boy Scouts Of America to Allow Openly Gay Leaders
Agreement Ensures That The Boy Scouts Provide Equal Opportunity For Gay Employees Nationwide
Schneiderman: Todays Announcement Is A Watershed Moment For The Boy Scouts Of America
NEW YORK Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today announced a settlement with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to end its policy of excluding openly gay adults from serving as leaders in the organization. As part of the settlement, the BSA has agreed to eliminate the standard nationally, develop guidelines for implementing its new leadership standard, and ensure compliance with anti-discrimination laws going forward.
Todays announcement is a watershed moment for the Boy Scouts of America. The mission of the Boy Scouts is to prepare our nations young people to become responsible citizens and leaders, and I can think of no better way of doing that than by enabling young people to learn from a diverse group of role models, said Attorney General Schneiderman. I am pleased to see the Boy Scouts of America renew its commitment to equal protection under the law, and I look forward to the organization welcoming a new generation of LGBT scout leaders in the months and years ahead.
"Our family is grateful for the support of the New York Attorney General in holding the Boy Scouts of America accountable for its anti-gay employment and membership policies, said Tracie Felker, the mother of Pascal Tessier, the gay youth member who applied to work for the Greater New York Councils. The policy change enacted today will lay the framework for a new era of acceptance and equal opportunity for gay scouts and leaders in the Boy Scout program."
The BSA was founded in 1910 and chartered by Congress with the mission of preparing young people to become responsible citizens and leaders. Historically, the BSA excluded openly gay individuals from membership and leadership, but this policy changed in May 2013, when the BSA announced that youth, up to age 17, could no longer be denied membership on the basis of sexual orientation alone. At that time, however, the BSA did not change its adult leadership standard and continued to maintain a nationwide policy that excluded openly gay individuals aged eighteen or older.
In December 2014, an openly gay BSA youth member, who had recently turned eighteen, submitted an application to work as a camp staffer with the Greater New York Councils. The Greater New York Councils hired the openly gay individual in February 2015. Aware that the staffer was required, as part of his employment, to register as an adult leader of the BSA, the Greater New York Councils submitted the staffers adult leader application to the BSA for such registration. The BSA registered the individual and took no action to interfere with his employment by the Greater New York Councils.
In response to concerns about the BSAs adult leadership standard, the Attorney Generals Civil Rights Bureau opened an investigation into the BSA in April 2015. As a result of the Attorney Generals investigation, the BSA took immediate steps to suspend the enforcement of its adult leadership standard in New York State. In May 2015, at its national annual meeting, BSA President Dr. Robert Gates encouraged the BSA to consider changing its leadership standard that excluded openly gay adults, and further stated that the BSA would not take any action against local councils that did not follow the BSAs leadership standard in order to comply with state anti-discrimination laws. First by vote of its Executive Committee on July 10, and then by ratification by its National Executive Board on July 27, 2015, the BSA rescinded its leadership standard.
Under the terms of the agreement with Attorney General Schneiderman, the BSA agreed to:
This matter is being handled by Assistant Attorney General Justin Deabler, and Civil Rights Bureau Chief Kristen Clarke. The Bureau is part of the Division of Social Justice, which is led by Executive Deputy Attorney General for Social Justice Alvin Bragg.
bump
From what I can understand, local BSA groups may be okay and not infiltrated by homos. A headline the other day said girls are now going to be allowed to be “Boy” Scouts. Your viewpoint would be good to read because the news about the BSA is far from cheering.
I doubt if there are accurate numbers of how many homos in the BSA.
I remember the threads about John Wheeler - such a tragic crime. And Biden was the AG, how sickening, didn’t remember (or know) that.
Recent news about the Weiner laptop and the NYPD is that Lynch, along with some other big name (was it Comey??) threatened the PD that if they went ahead with investigating the laptop contents, they would be sued about the Eric Garner death while being arrested. So the NYPD backed off. And then of course with Schneiderman as AG, the PD was cut off at the knees.
Rottenness that needs to be cut out and cauterized.
Thanks for the ping. I am glad that my two sons with whom I spent fifteen years actively involved in Scouting are middle aged and both have daughters. This further news, exaggerated or not, is sad to hear.
It was strangely stupid that the BSA let its national program be severely hampered by blinking some years ago. I have a lot of sympathy for fellow posters like “bert” who still see some worth and viability in the program as it still is actually being practiced in their area.
I have too much fondness for those years I spent with my sons and their fellows to spend any time campaigning against an aging program — My dog ain’t in that fight.
I have previously mentioned a few years ago at about age 60 I was in a barber shop and some fellow in his 30s came up to say Hi and when he realized I didn’t recognize him, he introduced himself as Jim Smith from a Webelos den a buddy and I had run almost 20 years earlier. He told me how many great memories he had of those times.
That is what is important, creating valued memories with our kids and other youngsters of our communities. Programs and politics being ruined or held together are secondary.
Boy, Mormons are probably ecstatic they had already announced they were no longer going to support the BSA, or the fruits camping with young bays group.
What’s fake about it?
Keep lying. The Internet keeps the rest of us informed.
What a polite response. I tend to get real nasty in response to this kind of post.
“There are more queer churchmen and teachers and coaches than associated with BSA.”
You don’t know that.
That’s just homosexual propaganda to claim their Scouting for Boys isn’t happening, yet, the homosexuals are desperately trying to keep within the BSA.
Why is that? They don’t have children, but can’t wait to be with boys they find sexually desirable, and we’re supposed to let them??
Homosexuality is mental illness and no mentally ill should be left with children.
No. He represents the sick society, us normals and deplorables represent the real America
It is a stupid statement not even worth of a reply. It is like saying that there are more murders in America than in New Orleans. On the surface, it is like saying that New Orleans is as safe as anywhere in America, even though it is one of the top five cities in America. But this "technical truth" becomes a blatant falsehood in what it is trying to imply.
These libertards are truly insane.
You are out of touch. You are too restricted in who you know.
Their motto is. "Kill the innocent and free the guilty"
No, they changed their name striking out BOY because they now accept girls too.
Sorry, the correct answer is, “Do a good deed daily.”
Such a pity. There is probably more to the story, as well; such as threats of Soros-financed rent-a-mobs all over any Eric Garner publicity, and the resulting cop assassinations by riled-up useful idiots.
It’s so sad, what has happened to the Boy Scouts. Now they march under the banner of diversity and inclusion. In the meantime, males continue to lose out in all kinds of ways - in schools and universities, in suicide rates. They’re prescribed drugs so they can fit into a school system that prefers female behavior. I wonder how long this myth of female oppression in this country will continue (and I’m female).
