Connecticut To Give Its Electoral College Votes To National Popular Vote Victor

Connecticut’s legislature has passed a bill that would give the state’s Electoral College votes to the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote nationally.

The state Senate voted 21-14 on Saturday to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which includes 10 states and the District of Columbia. The state House passed the measure last week, 77 to 73.

The compact requires its members to cast their Electoral College ballots for the presidential candidate who wins the national popular vote. The agreement goes into effect once states representing at least 270 electoral votes — the number needed for a candidate to win the presidency — signs the compact.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy (D) has promised to sign the legislation committing his state to the interstate agreement. Once he does so, the compact will have 172 electoral votes. California, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington and the District of Columbia have already signed the accord.

I could have sworn that states cannot enter into “treaties or compacts” with each other.

The Constitution is not being changed. The states have the Article II power to choose how to select Electors. Most select Electors in an all-or-nothing statewide vote; Nebraska and Maine award based on Congressional vote winners with 2 additional going to the statewide winner. A state could end voting altogether and let the legislature decide by majority vote if it wanted to.

What makes this different is the contingency of requiring other states totaling 270 electoral votes to similarly pass the law. That makes it an interstate compact, which requires Congressional approval. If the state chose to do it immediately without a dependency on other states, it could do so.

States can enter compacts with other states, but it requires Congressional approval.

Why go through the motions of voting? It’s hard to believe how stupid the politicians are
CT residents votes now mean absolutely nothing.

basing one states votes on other states votes. This is very unconstitutional. And completely subverting the will of the constitution. I certainly hope that someone sues over this.

These effing IDIOTS! They don't understand that to be President you need 270 Electoral Votes, if it was about the Popular Vote, you can expect tons of Republicans that didn't bother voting in Cali & NY will come out, then they will see, oh no we can't win the popular Vote either!

This will be repealed after the 2020 Trump landslide, or just as likely, they will say "Wait, we meant the one who LOST the popular vote".

“Connecticut Dems just took away the voting power of CT residents, and gave it to Illegal non-Citizens in California. What the hell is wrong with these people???”

Connecticut Democrats vote like California Democrats. They are in solidarity.

The Senate was supposed to represent the State legislatures in Congress.

The 17th Amendment fundamentally destroyed the system of Federalism put in place by the Founders, effectively destroying the Republic.

This nonsense is just more of the same, a direct assault on Americans in States not controlled by communists.

As if we would just sit back and allow this to happen for real.

Right now all this is just marxist subterfuge, it needs to be challenged and shut down on principle.

Why didn’t CT vote to just drop itself from the Electoral College as the effect here is the same?

Yes; un-Constitutional. The USSC should take it up before 2020. Provided we’re still here.

Way to pervert the Constitution, Connecticut.!

(Not that Connecticut doesn’t vote reliably hard-core leftist anyway)

Connecticut calls itself “The Constitution State”.... They ought to change that, as it is false advertising.

This is great!

When Trump wins again in 2020, this time with a majority of the national vote, all these democrat states will be voting for him.
He’ll get 520 electoral votes to Pocohantas Warren’s 16.

This is a lose-lose for these hardcore Democrat states.

If they counted their votes, only, they would have 100% chance of giving their votes to the Democrat.

HOWEVER

Since they are intending to base it on National Popular Vote, there is a chance THOSE ELECTORAL COLLEGE VOTES WILL GO TO THE REPUBLICAN.

There is no upside here.

This is a great idea, FOR OUR SIDE.

Southack, you once spoke of political judo. Have you been pushing this idea in liberal circles? :) :) :)
