ROCKUMENTARY: 50 YEARS AGO TODAY

#46: SPANKY & OUR GANG: “LIKE TO GET TO KNOW YOU”

Some viewed them as a bargain basement version of the Mamas & the Papas, but they are better classified in the “sunshine” category. Lead singer Elaine McFarlane was not related to child star Spanky, but the name sounded commercial and it stuck. In hindsight, their first album from 1967 sounds rather schlocky today, but it sold well enough. This would become a hit, and the production values are a bit higher.

On the album the song ends cold, and the long fadeout comes at the end of the second side. For the single, the two tracks were merged into one.

An old Kentucky Colonel was being honored for his years of service to state & community with the dedication of a bust in his image.

A beautiful Kentucky belle came up to him & gushed, “Colonel, I want you to know I’ve come from miles away just to see your bust unveiled.”

The Colonel doffed his hat and replied, “Madame, I would gladly return the compliment!”
