The Israeli parliament late on Monday granted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu greater authority to take his country to war, at a time when tensions between Israel and Iran are reaching new heights.
Netanyahu can now declare war with only the approval of the defence minister, currently hardliner Avigdor Lieberman, in "extreme situations", according to Israeli daily Haaretz.
Previously the prime minister would need the approval of the entire Israeli cabinet in order to declare war.
The news of the Israeli parliaments decision emerged following a 20-minute presentation in which Netanyahu accused Iran of continuing to pursue its nuclear weapons programme in contravention of the 2015 nuclear deal.
According to Haaretz, Netanyahu proposed the changes on Monday morning during a debate on transferring war powers from the broader cabinet to the smaller security cabinet.
The proposal was originally opposed by the joint committee of the foreign affairs and defence committee and the constitution, law and justice committee.
However the Israeli foreign affairs and defence committee chairman, Avi Dichter, later brought the amendment to a vote, in which it was passed 62 to 41.
The amendment was brought forward in response to the recommendations of the Amidror Committee, a body tasked with examining the security cabinets effectiveness and the processes of going to war, which have remained largely untouched since Israels invasion of south Lebanon in 1982.

The entire Middle East is aware.
It does affect the interests of the U.S. too.
I was going to say something on an earlier thread about Israeli tank movements, but at this point its almost obvious. Between the Iranian nuke lecture, the Iranian rocket storage base attack in Hama, and now this, I think we better get ready for a very news busy month of May. Israel sees a threat (that is clearly not seen or avoided by the MSM) and is gearing up to do something about it. Despite all the talk, Russia is a paper tiger and wont stop any Israeli action...JMO
Iz-Lib news source , but GREAT NEWS!
Netanyahu wants to hit Iran hard, very hard before he leaves office. If he humiliates Iran, there is a good chance that the mullah regime will collapse. Then a government that will allow Iran to enter the modern 21st century and does not seek Israel’s destruction.
Netanyahu realizes that Iran has devolved into an existential threat to Israel’s existence. While others dismiss the mullah’s bizarre antics and “death to Israel” rhetoric and refuse to believe that they are seeking missile and nuclear weapons that can effectuate those threats, Netanyahu does not have the luxury of ignoring the threats. He is haunted by the early 1920’s. Then German Jews had the power and means to take definitive action against Hitler and his thugs. Tragically for the world and all of Western civilization they did not act. The Jews suffered the Holocaust. Netanyahu is determined to take definitive action and remove this Iranian existential threat to the Jewish people before he leaves office. If he doesn’t he will never have a moment of real peace.
I don’t question his resolve. He will protect Israel.
Buckle up, fellas... It’s about to Get Real —
Russia wants the oil, bases and the strait. Putin has no desire to open a global war for Iran.
He will use Turkey to a point.
Turkey? Headshake.
And some strange new alliances. Saudi Arabia and Israel? That is something new.
Yes, we are there too.
And over the next few days, remember the documents that Israel got from Iran. More about that will seep out. Very interesting times.
Yes, Sir.
Sounds like Iran is fixing to receive a serious whuppin. Been a long time coming. Pretty confident BiBi won’t mess around.
Is Iranian air defense all Russian made?
Not sure, certainly most of it is.
There are some background things happening in Iran too.
That will come out soon I think.
“If he humiliates Iran, there is a good chance that the mullah regime will collapse.”
Regime change is what would really solve the problem, but Israel probably can’t do that on their own. Getting rid of the regime would likely require a big covert effort within Iran itself, and possibly some major economic disruption, like a banking collapse.
Israel could mount a serious strike on Iranian military and surrogates in Syria though, which could be a major component of a combined assault to take down the regime.
“There are some background things happening in Iran too.”
Oh, do tell...

The way I see it, the Persians gotta lil payback comin to’m. We never properly thanked them for capturing our embassy and holding our staff hostage for over a year, not to mention humiliating the crew of one of our patrol boats in the gulf.
I vote the minute Israel begins teaching these muzzies some manners, we send a few hundred tomahawks and bunker busters to convey our appreciation for their hospitality through the years.
