Andrew Brunson, a Christian pastor who has lived in Turkey for more than two decades, was indicted on charges of helping the group that Ankara holds responsible for a failed 2016 coup against President Tayyip Erdogan. He faces up to 35 years in prison.
"I've never done something against Turkey. I love Turkey. I've been praying for Turkey for 25 years. I want the truth to come out," Brunson told the court in Turkeys Aegean city of Izmir.
All accusations against Brunson are based on three secret witness statements. No substantial evidence shows that the pastor is a member of the group (Gulenist movement) responsible for the failed coup. The document of Secretariat of the National Intelligence Organisation (MIT) obtained by The Region reveals that the detention of Brunson is unlawful and decided within the chain of command.
