How can we help you make this happen?
Of course those parts of California wanting to secede and form their own state within the US must be permitted to do so.
Didn’t the south try this a number of years ago. That didn’t go well.
Like a bitter woman, California will be demanding alimony and support.
Jerry Brown for Security General \o/
YES!!!!!!! But by county option only, and Mexifornia becomes a protectorate of the USA.
Mexicans have colonized CA and do not intend to give it back.
Wasn’t the problem with secession dealt with by Salmon P. Chase in a SCOTUS ruling about Texas back in 1869?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_v._White
In accepting original jurisdiction, the court ruled that, legally speaking, Texas had remained a United States state ever since it first joined the Union, despite its joining the Confederate States of America and its being under military rule at the time of the decision in the case.
****In deciding the merits of the bond issue, the court further held that the Constitution did not permit states to unilaterally secede from the United States, and that the ordinances of secession, and all the acts of the legislatures within seceding states intended to give effect to such ordinances, were “absolutely null”.[2]****
If Calexit comes to pass, which of the three states remain in the US? Also, will the ratification process pass? And most importantly, only one person gives final approval of the deal; the President of the United States.
Can you imagine if this all comes down to Trump having to sign off on this?
Something tells me they will angle for a deal to keep those votes, yet not have to pay into a Trump tax coffer.
In regard to splitting California into three states, this is provided for in the Constitution, Article 4, Section 3:
“...no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.”
Based on this, if the California legislature votes to split into three states, all it takes is a majority vote in the House of Representatives and Senate to make it so. There is no requirement that the Executive approve it in any way.
As far as State secession goes, I do not believe it is Constitutional at all. There is no provision for it in the Constitution by design. And we had a war that decided that.
Totally true. I work in Silicon Valley but have a weekend house in the Sierras. Everyone up there is conservative. If California voted to secede, counties like that one would leave California to stay in the US. And given that’s where all the water comes from (for Northern Cal at least)......
How can I help? Is there also a parallel effort #CALGONE underway to expel them from the USA?
My God California has the 9th largest GDP in the world. They’ll be fine.
That’s a good idea!
LOL
The irony is that the real answer is much more robust Federalism. Scale back the federal government and give the states a lot more power over domestic issues. Let the Feds just take care of Defense, foreign policy, border control, etc.
They probably would.
That is poppycock.
I’m fine with Californians wanting to secede from the union. Pack up your crap and drive north till you enter Canada or south until you get into Mexico and good riddance because America is going to keep the land.
You make a good point.
