Chuck Schumer introduces bill to decriminalize marijuana
Washington Examiner ^ | April 20, 2018 | Susan Ferrechio

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer introduced legislation Friday that would decriminalize marijuana at the federal level and establish “dedicated funding streams” for women and minority businesses to grow and distribute the drug.

“The time has come to decriminalize marijuana,” Schumer, D-N.Y., said in a statement. “My thinking, as well as the general population’s views on the issue has evolved, and so I believe there’s no better time than the present to get this done. It’s simply the right thing to do.”

Schumer’s legislation would maintain laws that prevent trafficking of marijuana across state lines in cases where the drug is legal in one state but not in a neighboring state.

How Your Small Business Can Take Advantage of Instagram Watch Full Screen to Skip Ads It would also call for dedicated funding for “highway safety research,” to “assess the pitfalls of driving under the influence of THC,” and to develop impairment testing for drugged drivers.

The bill would also call for funding research into the health effects of using marijuana as well as whether it is effective for treating medical ailments.

Schumer’s endorsement of marijuana follows Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s decision to bring up legislation that would legalize hemp, which is grown for industrial use and does not contain THC.

McConnell, R-Ky., plans a vote on the measure in the coming weeks.

Kentucky is one of the country’s top producers of hemp.

Also on Friday, D.C.’s nonvoting delegate, Democrat Eleanor Holmes Norton, said she will introduced a bill and file an amendment to the House fiscal year 2019 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill that would legalize use of medical marijuana in public housing, as long as medical marijuana is legal in the state. The bill would permit the use of medical marijuana in federally-assisted housing, including public housing and the Section 8 housing program.

Norton plans to speak at the third annual National Cannabis Festival in Washington on Saturday.

Norton pointed to polls showing 90 percent support for legalizing medical marijuana.

“Individuals living in federally funded public housing who are prescribed legal, medical marijuana should not fear eviction for simply treating their medical conditions,” Norton said. “Our legislation should attract bipartisan support because it also protects states’ rights.”

How so? Where in the Constitution is the federal government granted authority over the intrastate growing, selling, or using of marijuana?

Forget it, NF. There’s a strong contingent of supposed (C) that will happily support Fascism vs. their pet peeve(s); Constitution be damned.

Well that may be ... but it will not be long before you see the correlation between rates and DUI ...

I love coming to Co each year to fish in the mountains ... but I have removed Co from my "wish I owned a cabin there" list of states because Co will soon be a liberal mecca ... a once red state has turned solid blue. Granted, there are pockets of deep red ... but it votes like California now ... there are not enough conservatives to swing the state. It a crying shame ...

CO being a liberal mecca is because liberals from the coasts moved here for their “cabin” and ruined it.

Yes, the Rats' support for federalism is highly selective at best. (Sadly, some "conservatives" will likewise dump federalism when it suits them.)

Oh, I'm not expecting a sound answer ... I'm just rubbing their noses in their hypocrisy.

If it doesn't promote future drug usage, then why is it spreading?

The major reason of that is the suppliers.

Why not buy some meth and crack? It's the same guy selling it. How many alcohol purchases would include coke or meth if it was sold along side it as well?

Prohibition only creates criminal monopolies.

Funny ya mention that. We noticed you rabidly promote medical fascism.

Care to explain how we survived as a nation without drug laws?

Schumer gets something right for all the wrong reasons as usual.

If he actually cared about the issue he would have done this when Odumbo was in office or even sooner.

IMO, ol Marvin just comes to cannabis related threads to get his troll on.

He never answers direct questions regarding cannabis & he never will.

Last week he tried desperately to troll a couple of cannabis-related threads and no one would take his bait. I loved it.

The good news is Marvin & prohibitionists have lost the argument according to voters where the issue has been decided in more states & now some legislatures every year. Granted Schumer is desperate to make the RATs poll numbers inch up but once again, President Trump has outsmarted Chuckie-poo & got ahead of him on the issue.

“sschmuckhead trying to get the younger demo to the polls with promises of free dope”

President Trump shot that idea right in the butt a week earlier by supporting leaving intrastate mj regulation to the states — without federal interference. It was basically a kill-shot to marijuana prohibition in the US, and Chuckie was late to the party.

You might say Schumer got Trumped!

I agree.
Decriminalize it.
While these stoners are busy navel gazing, we can get back to business. The loss of potential productivity will be a drag, however.

The Rs should’ve beat the Ds to the punch on this.

Not that I endorse the activity. The Bible is clear that we should not poison our bodies for simple physical pleasure. This isn’t really about that.

This is about the utter destruction of the constitution and our liberties in pursuit of curbing marijuana use.

The cure, in this case, is worse than the disease.
