When Paul Ryan became speaker of the House 30 short months ago, he was a free trader and ardent internationalist. He supported comprehensive immigration reform and believed that the Republican Party should make sincere and ongoing overtures to minority voters. He was fiercely committed to fiscal responsibility and deficit reduction as keys to private sector-driven economic growth. To many, he represented the future of the Republican Party.
Under Trump, Ryan's GOP no long exists, leaving Republicans singing the old Willie Nelson song, "I've Got a Wonderful Future Behind Me."
President Trump's version of Republicanism is about wall-building literally, economically and philosophically and rejects the optimistic and aspirational policy objectives that drew a generation of young conservatives like Ryan to public service. Trump's brand of populism is instead fueled by a collection of grievances, resentments and vitriol that blames others for our problems rather than empowering us to overcome them. For the past year-and-a-half, Ryan has struggled to survive in the uncomfortable role of Trump's accomplice or the even more uncomfortable role of Trump's hostage.
Now he is almost free. And in the long run, Ryan's emancipation from the president's cramped and vitriolic narrative gives the Republican Party an opportunity to build its post-Trump future.
The immediate future, for both Trump and what is now his party, is bleak. But perhaps this upcoming time in the wilderness will enable the emergence of a new right-of-center Ryan Underground movement that helps Republicans reclaim their status as the party of ideas.

Dan Schnur worked on four Republican presidential campaigns and three GOP campaigns for governor of California. He is now a registered independent No Party Preference voter.
Ryan just helped to pass a trillion dollar busting budget.
Conservative ideas? Don’t make mew laugh. Good riddance.
A post-Trump Republican Party would be an irrelevant centrist party with a tiny base of support.
A new Trump Populist Party would be slugging it out with Democrats on a national stage.
Another centrist Repuke adviser who helped ruined the party trying to preach to us Deplorables! Your losing formula for the GOP to become Democrat Party lite has been exposed and being turned back!
Both parties could not continue to represent illegal aliens and leave the citizens without any representation.
Bush League Republicanism is not dead yet, but it should become extinct.
This is a California style Republican author. Misguided as he tries to be.
He misses here about Ryan and his speculation about the GOP and it’s misgivings and from which they stem.
Wow... that Paul RyNO sounds more like Reagan than Reagan.
Label it the post-winning GOP.
Well, the GOP was the Democrats. Under Trump, that may be a little less true. But the jury is still out. I've hoping that the GOP evolves into a Republican Party eventually.
Their hope would be that Democrats take over and fail miserably, leaving an opening for them.
Ryan won't be leading the underground, though. He's probably had enough of politics.
I’m thinking that Ryan will be teaming up with Romney again...if he ever really left him.
Trump has done much better. His economic policies are providing opportunity, jobs, better pay, better living conditions, independence, freedom, self-reliance and self-respect. Despite socialist propaganda to the contrary, Americans would much rather have a paycheck than a welfare check.
Ryan actually has undercut the presidents more-popular agenda. The one that won a national election. Something Ryans agenda with Mitt did not come close to doing. Weve had three cycles of issues based strong common sense conservative ideas in the past decade. 2010, 2014 and 2026. We gained major ground in each of those and got destroyed in 2012, which was the Ryan model.
The fairy tale these losers spin in the consultant class is so weak with even a basic comparison to reality. If the GOP goes for the Ryan open borders weak on trade tax cuts for the rich and ignores the working class they will fade into obscurity. Maybe thats the goal.
Against strenuous objections from Donald Trump who even threatened to veto it. Who is the fiscal conservative here?
This guy writes about politics... FOR A LIVING?????
geez that’s some revisionist talent.
If you or I even attempted what they do on a daily basis, we would be in prison for 30 years. Instead, they come in with almost no net worth, and leave Congress as millionaires.
There is no GOP “underground”. There is the GOP DONOR PARTY and no other, wide open and visible and arrogantly so.
That’s why TRUMP won... even among Union voters.
Where was the “fiscal responsibility” Ryan when he helped Obama DOUBLE the national debt?
as keys to private sector-driven economic growth.
Private sector GDP growth under Trump so far, has been far better than under Obama. Obama's EPA policies were designed to kill the economy.
Trump might just be the start of divorce proceedings.
That is very good.
