A prominent LGBTQ rights lawyer died after setting himself on fire in Brooklyn's Prospect Park on Saturday. David Buckel, 60, killed himself after sending messages to multiple news outlets including The New York Times claiming his intentions to set himself on fire to protest the world's usage of fossil fuels at the expense of the environment.
"Pollution ravages our planet, oozing inhabitability via air, soil, water and weather," Buckel wrote the Times in an email. "Most humans on the planet now breathe air made unhealthy by fossil fuels, and many die early deaths as a result - my early death by fossil fuel reflects what we are doing to ourselves."
"A life of privilege requires actions to balance the harm caused, and the greater the privilege, the greater the responsibility," Buckel added.
"For if one does not leave behind a world better for having lived in it, all that remains are selfish ends, sometimes wrapped in family or nation."

It says he sent messages to the media, yet did no one do a welfare check on him? Maybe they were sitting in peoples’ inboxes.
His body was found by a jogger.

LGBTQ. That’s bad enough. That AND an earth first? I thought they hated each other and were together for convenience.
Those type of people are often mentally unstable.
I hope he only used a flint or some other "clean" form of energy to meet his demise
We all should decide what we are willing to die for and he has chosen. It is sad that he has chosen to die for one of the greatest boons to mankind that has ever been invented, the use of fossil fuels.
Wide spread distribution of electricity was achieved largely through the use of fossil fuels. Many lives around the world have been improved.
The invention of the internal combustion engine through the use of fossil fuels has improved the distribution of goods, construction of grand buildings, transportation for millions around the world. Elimination of mega tons of poop if it were still done with horses.
But I do like the poetic justice and symbolism of him using fossil fuels do do his stupid deed.
I will finish my coffee sitting here in my warm house all courtesy of fossil fuels and smile.

Suicide is a horrible thing to those left behind. Prayers for his soul. *some of the comments above are pretty funked up.. That being said:
Why did he hold a protest in the early morning with no one around?
A typed suicide note?
He was 60, was he ill/aids/cancer?
Did he know the Clintons?
The one common denominator among the LGBT community is their unhappiness with their life and their goal at bringing everyone around them to the same state of despair. They attack everyone and everything around the in order to disperse the misery equally!!!!
