April 13 (UPI) -- A venture capitalist billionaire said he received enough signatures to get a measure on California's November ballot that asks voters if they want to split California into three states.
Tim Draper, the chairman of Cal 3, the organization pushing the measure, said they've obtained more than 600,000 signatures -- nearly twice the number needed to get on a state ballot -- and will present them to the California Secretary of State for verification.

“Each with two senators!”
Oh noe, two more Sheldon $hithouses!
You are right. Mea Culpa. I looked at a map that was not sufficiently expanded. It made it look to me as if S.F. was in San Mateo.
I guess that would revise my preference, to include S.F. county as well, as part of any new California and not part of a Northern California. That would still leave, along the cost, from Marin county north out of “California”.
“California is like a rich mans out house 3 sh*tholes are better than one.”
You could not be more wrong, but then if your screen name is any indication, you live on a hillside in Lichtenstein, and are protected by the Swiss. BTW, I’ve stayed in Schaan several times!
The new states would have to petition Congress for admission to the union and be approved by both houses. We will still have fifty states until both the state and federal authorities have okayed the change.
Presumably, the vote of the state legislature now would count as California's consenting to the creation of the new states, so the matter would move to Congress, in the unlikely event that California decides to split up.
Should be an East and West California.
The “new” states will have to apply to the Union for statehood.
Well, if we still have a Constitution.

Looks like three blue states to me. Norcal has the bay area and Sacramento. The liberal populations in those areas will more than offset the vote from the more sparsely populated northern counties. Likewise Socal has a big chunk of the LA and southern California area that will do the same.

Our daughter lives in Petaluma which is in Sonoma County ( just north of Marin), and the people there hate Marin). We live over in Contra Costa County, and just hope it’s out of the state that includes SF and the Peninsula. Our second home is in Carmel, which is hopelessly in the SF sphere, so if the breakup happens we may own property in another state!
Three Californias?
Just the one is bad enough!
Three Californias, three times the misery and more bureaucratic red tape than ever.
Maybe they need to do this to keep the gardeners and maids they brought in on their own side of the state.
They can take high speed rail to work and back as long as they stay away from the limousine owners and don’t jump their fences.
See things could be worse than they are now.
Yes they would get 6 Senators if Congress approved the move.
I think it is time for City states to be formed separated from the states around them. They can elect reps and one senator if they are over 75% citizens of the us.
Otherwise they lose the senator and 25% of the reps.
ah, ok, I didn’t realize the red part of norcal was so sparsely populated
That is such BS! WTH is WRONG with this REPUBLICAN Senate?!!!

Scam to water down the two way split.
More to the fact California is one big sh*thole all sewers lead to it.
I don’t know how your math is working, but my math is showing three solid blue states. I realize that all that red in the north might be implying a red state, but the Bay area/Sacramento nexus vastly outnumbers the rest of the zone - heck, my county has less than 78,000 people in it.
That split is gerrymandered to ensure that all three states will be solid blue. And likely will pass with flying colors if it makes it to California’s ballot.
Rural coastal (new) California should start getting ready to have the prisons dumped on them.
