Here’s Why Teachers Are Still Walking Out Despite $6000 Raises

Thousands of Oklahoma teachers walked out of school Monday and protested at the state capitol for higher salaries and increased funding.

Oklahoma legislators approved a $6,100 raise for state teachers across the board in an attempt to evade the walk-out, but teachers proceeded with the protest, NBC News reported.

“My niece sits on the floor in her middle school English class in Moore, Oklahoma, because they’re overloaded into the class and don’t have enough furniture,” Edmond Public Schools elementary teacher Carrie Akins told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

“My son in ninth grade had to get an override on his schedule because his Spanish class was too full … he was student number 41 in the class. As a state, we have failed them.”

Based on the 31,000 average STARTING pay in OK and 180 days of required days in school, the STARTING pay is $172.22 per day. Assuming an 8 hr day, STARTING pay is 21.53 per hour.

Based on 52 weeks, STARTING pay is $596.15 per week or 14.90 per hour (40 hr week).

I thought those who are advocating for a minimum wage of $15.00 because people need a living wage would be happy since the STARTING pay is pretty close to it based on 52 week basis.

OK has taken taxes from home owners to pay for schools, where did that money go?

OK passed the lottery with the promise most would go to the schools, where did that money go?

OK has passed many school funding bills over the years, where did that money go?

OK schools get federal grants, where did that money go?

Instead of buying each student a laptop computer, maybe the money should be used to build more classrooms with desks. Pencil and paper were fine back in my day.

Well, good news is, if we get the wall built, he won’t need to learn Spanish to speak to his future overlords anymore.

Every single teacher could be the best thing since sliced bread.

But they are STILL unaffordable. Not their salaries, though those are bad enough.

But their pensions and health bennies cannot be afforded by taxpayers.

Hey, I got a plan. Bring back wood shop, and have them make chairs as their final project. Win-win.

If the schools do lower the number of students in a classroom the school districts will not get the federal money they feast on now.

Same with the lunch program, more on reduced lunches the more federal money they get.

So.... is spanish the only FOREIGN language at that school???

I wonder what percentage of students there consider it to be "foreign?"

And the kid "sitting on the floor?"

Really?

There is not one more chair in the entire school?

Schools also got an extra $50 mil in general which was 20% of what they asked for. In the end they got over half of what they wanted up front.

IMHO they are taking too harsh of stance. They have to acknowledge what they got and plan another walkout for next year. They have lost my support. This looks a little fishy and more like revenge.

WHAT HAVE THEY DONE WITH THE MONEY THEY’VE BEEN GIVEN?

It is the increasing layers of bureaucracy - administrators and assistant administrators and deputies and their countless secretaries and assistants and now you have to have bus assistants and crossing guards.

All the overlord's phone answering messages will have to be reprogrammed to do away with "press 2 for English"

If there are 40 students per classroom, then that’s a failure of the school district. No school district should be “surprised” by the number of students coming into their buildings. The numbers are tracked and estimated, even years in advance. If your school district intentionally allowed the numbers to grow like that, without planning for more buildings, temporary classrooms, hiring more staff, etc... then it’s time to go to a new district. Clearly, there is no lack in the demand for teachers with half a brain, if the numbers are already this high.

They are not really concerned with the class size because they can get money from federal grants. They really don’t want to give up all that money.

AND don't forget "Armed School Resource Officers" (who hide behind cars in case of an attack).

“I hate that administrators won’t get rid of a bad teacher (provided they don’t break laws or mistreat students) because there are no other teachers lining up to teach,” Akins said to TheDCNF. “

Horse$hit! I’d bet every new teacher job opening would have 100 qualified applications instantly.

Public school teachers are a dime a dozen because ED is by far the easiest major based on the SAT scores.

There are some very good public school teachers, but on average they are the bottom of the barrel.

Money will not fix overcrowding. The teachers are striking because their pension is affected, not because of over-crowding.

State workers in Va have to kick in 5% towards the pension, depending on the plan. I don’t know about OK.

There should be no public employee unions.
Teaching used to be a professional occupation.

Liberals think the well is bottomless and there can always be more and more of everything and it’s all free!

When they want more of something (and they always do) the government should just give it to them and extort more money from others to pay for it.

Only a liberal would see it as a societal tragedy that there are budget restraints.

Liberals can’t accept the fact that the supply of everything they want isn’t infinite and immediately available to them.

They are aghast that there are a limited number of seats in a classroom and someone might have to wait until the next session to take a certain course.

In liberal La-La-Land the classrooms are like the expansion rooms on RV’s - you just roll the room out to make more space.

How do they handle a trip to the fair or to Disneyland where there actually is a finite number of seats on each ride?

Is it terribly old fashioned to think of making wise and sometimes difficult choices so a person or organization can live within a budget?
