First it was Confederate monuments. Now statues offensive to Native Americans are poised to topple.

Over the decades, this quiet coastal hamlet has earned a reputation as one of the most liberal places in the nation. Arcata was the first U.S. city to ban the sale of genetically modified foods, the first to elect a majority Green Party city council and one of the first to tacitly allow marijuana farming before pot was legal.

Now it's on the verge of another first.

No other city has taken down a monument to a president for his misdeeds. But Arcata is poised to do just that. The target is an 8½-foot bronze likeness of William McKinley, who was president at the turn of the last century and stands accused of directing the slaughter of Native peoples in the U.S. and abroad.

"Put a rope around its neck and pull it down," Chris Peters shouted at a recent rally held at the statue, which has adorned the central square for more than a century.

Peters, who heads the Arcata-based Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous People, called McKinley a proponent of "settler colonialism" that "savaged, raped and killed."

A presidential statue would be the most significant casualty in an emerging movement to remove monuments honoring people who helped lead what Native groups describe as a centuries-long war against their very existence.

The push follows the rapid fall of Confederate memorials across the South in a victory for activists who view them as celebrating slavery. In the nearly eight months since white supremacists marched in central Virginia to protest the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue, cities across the country have yanked dozens of Confederate monuments. Black politicians and activists have been among the strongest supporters of the removals.

This time, it's tribal activists taking charge, and it's the West and California in particular leading the way.

No, but I do have little respect for unsubstantiated slanders - or people who utter them. Like you.

His ancestor might’ve been one of those poor ignorant Irish or German immigrants straight off the boat, my ancestors felt bad about having to shoot them, said those boys were being used as cannon fodder. It got so prevalent at one point they were convinced they were fighting Hessian mercenaries again, just like their grandfathers and great grandfathers had in the Revolution. Just another myth of The Great White North, I suppose. Why, of course we weren’t blowing illiterate Irish and German peasants to smithereens in our place in order to fight the war that our banksters demanded be fought.

Quite frankly I don’ give a damn what happened to the Indians. Bunch of neolithic savages who got it into their heads they owned land. That’s a funny one. a people who made it a point to eschew the idea of ownership fought to claim everything they stood on was theirs. They hated and attacked the whites but boy, did they sure love the white mans stuff. Like horses, fire arms and iron implements and casino gambling. Yes sir, they sure did ok by all of that. Everybody’s a victim in history.

Unsubstantiated? You use leftist buzzwords and slogans, you argue like a leftist, you seem to have no problem with history you dislike being erased, fully aware though you obviously are that it won’t stop with that. These are people who agree with you. You know this.

"What kind of nation would we be today"

Hopefully nothing like it. Slaves, everywhere you look. Taxpayers, slaves to the state, welfare and food stamp slaves to the state, social security and medicare slaves to the state, and millions of unborn children slaves to the debt run up by the state. You love slavery don't you? Your stupid ancestor helped preserve this. Be proud.

Clear that plot for your Union monuments, jmacusa. Remember that. It’s coming.

The primary debate should be about WHY the north felt it had ownership of the South to the extent that it could justify the killing of 750,000 young men in the prime of their lives along with the savage treatment of the South for twelve additional years after the war.

An alternate question for you would be why the Southern states, after waging a bloody and protracted rebellion that took the lives of almost three-quarters of a million Americans, were treated so lightly and accepted back into the body politic so quickly? The answer to that is the generosity of the Northern people.

They like to talk about how horrible it is for one human being to own another human being without even realizing that what they so proudly defend has morphed into a supreme human being ownership machine. Today's massive federal government owns 95% of everyone who is over 65, being in total control of their sustenance and health. Today's massive federal government owns everyone it sends food stamps and welfare to, or provides housing for. THIS is what "won" the Civil War. The United States of Abraham Lincoln won the war and all of it's future citizens are the actual losers.

Oh barf. If you want to talk about federal overreach then look to those who caused it - Woodrow Wilson, Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Sam Rayburn, Trent Lott, the Bush's, Alben Barkley, Robert Byrd, and all the other Southern political leaders who made this country what it is today. Based on that, the only question one can ask is...haven't we paid enough for Sherman's march??????

Irish. Definitely Irish.

And where would Lost Causers be without some ethnic group to look down on? Doesn't matter who it is so long as you think you can look good by comparison.

Just more emo statist drivel from you, not surprising since you’re in agreement with leftist authoritarians, both then and now. One thing’s for sure, they’ll never tear down your Maypole, so you’ll always have that.

Haha, the stupid, it’s funny. My surname may be English but I have numerous Irish lines including O’Neal, but they came the old fashioned way, they were transported in the 1600’s. Don’t be so quick to jump when your progressive programming causes you to perceive bias, even if you think it’ll make you look good by comparison.

Listen Doo-Doo, your bull no longer works. Defending the indefensible doesn’t last forever and TRUTH has a way of finally revealing itself. Your attempts at justifying what happened back then really diminishes your image on this forum. When you talk about the generosity of the northern people after the war, I assume you are referring to the carpetbaggers who generously helped themselves to the property of Southerners and brought it back north. They were so against owning other people just so they could project ownership of an entire region for twelve years after the end of the conflict.
