I don’t know whether being “humbled” on Facebook will teach him humility ... it might teach him that his mother is an attention-seeking neurotic. However, if he spends some time at thrift stores and sees what can be purchased for nearly nothing, he may grow up thrifty.
Personally, I think Goodwill is too expensive. I go to The Salvation Army store on half-price day.
I agree. The SA is a wonderful store and doesn’t exploit. Locally, we have Mennonite operated thrift shops, too. What can be found for a song is amazing.
Funny. You dont have to shop at Goodwill, you get to! Lately it seems that bargains are hard to find there. Shopping at Walmart is lowbrow. Goodwill is penny pinching and there was is no embarrassment in that. If she wants to shame him send him to DG for clothes or Sears.
Hell, thirteen-year-olds are running the country now, near as I can tell.
Hey everybody in my family knows how cheap I am. I know today is the resurrection but I’m telling ya at my very elderly mom’s funeral when I tell her “I bought this suit at Goodwill.” I can see her now coming back to life just to kick me.
Canceled my “membership” in Goodwill after they got rid of “Veteran’s Discount Day” in favor of some other marketing scheme that some liberal snowflake thought up.
I agree. In the last 10 years GW has become way to expensive. I can get the same stuff new at Walmart. That being said, I would often get good designer clothing at Goodwill.
One time I was out in the rain cleaning a clogged roof gutter. My wife came out and said that I should not be wearing a $150 Columbia coat to do that job. I told her it was not a $150 coat it was a $7.99 coat, she still didn't buy it. Funny.
They furnished an entire apartment from Craig's list including a 50" flatscreen TV.
They're hardly poor....just really, really frugal.
The past couple of years I've noticed that when I'd drop stuff at the SA, they have guys come out and sort through it. I was told that they were refusing some of the stuff, no idea why just that they had refused some donations. I've since started donating my stuff to a local DAV. They really seem to appreciate anything that I've put out for them.
I usually cut the mailing address off any magazines that I give them but one got through and a couple of weeks later I got a call from a patient at the VA Hospital in Iowa City. He'd got a copy of my American Rifleman and he looked my number up and called to thank me for donating those magazines.
He told me that the patients really like getting them.
I'm a DAV guy now.
As a reseller I shop daily at these stores.
I taught my daughters to shop 2nd hand for many items they are hooked on auctions, estate sales garage sales,EBay, andCraigslist. They have found wonderful quality items. Dont knock it.I bought a bowl at an estate sale that sold for$1600 on EBay.
“I go to The Salvation Army store on half-price day.”
LOL.
A friend of mine makes fun of me for going to Ross Dress for Less. I tell her “If they opened a place called ‘Dress for Less than Ross’ I’d switch.
Mine grew up with thrift store and garage sale clothes, toys and books. Brand new outfits with the store tags still on were 25 cents or whole bags for $1. All prom dresses were bought at Goodwill for $12. They were still the better dressed kids in school.
I love goodwill...some of my favorite things have come from them and other such places.
