UNION CITY U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, the two-term Democrat whose federal corruption trial ended in a hung jury in November, returned to his hometown this morning to announce his bid for a third term, pledging to fight the Trump administration's policies on immigration, climate change and health care.
Menendez, 64, received a hero's welcome at Union City High School, which was filled with 2,000 cheering students waving Menendez campaign signs and a host of fellow Democrats who sang hosannas about New Jersey's senior senator. Menendez joined the Democrats in casting himself as a bulwark against President Trump.
"There is a president in Washington who spends his days dividing us and distracting us but never delivering for us, who believes that being wealthy is the same thing as being worthy," Menendez said. "Under his watch, health care is getting more expensive, environmental protections are being gutted, women's rights are under attack."
