Offutt Airbase, Nebraska (CNN)If the unthinkable happens and a nuclear exchange between the US and North Korea or Russia happens, President Donald Trump will rely on a secure underground facility at a base in the middle of the United States to carry out his orders. And four-star Air Force Gen. John Hyten, the commander of US Strategic Command, would be at the center of it all. "Our strategic responses are always ready to respond and everybody should know that," Hyten told CNN in an interview inside the highly secured 'Battle Deck' where he would oversee a nuclear response if the US is attacked or if Trump decides to launch a pre-emptive strike. "That they are ready this minute -- under the ground, under the sea, in the air, we are ready to respond, and the adversaries of the world -- including Kim Jong Un -- have to know that."

That makes you guys “ground zero” on Vlad’s hit parade list. Glad I live 350 miles to the southwest, UPWIND of your location!
“Well, boys, this is it - nuclar combat, toe-ta-toe wit the Roosskies!” WAHOO!
Uh, this is Nebraska - we don’t have “mountains” here. You’re thinking of “Crystal Palace,” in Colorado Springs, CO.
Oh yeah? No wonder you were banned. Nothing like a foul-mouthed self-proclaimed Christian! And another thing: while you were sitting cozy in some navy tin can out at sea, I was watching Saddam’s Scud missiles flying overhead, and saw and heard the devastation.
CNN could care less.
How much less?
“Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here! This is the War Room!”
“Mr. President, I’m not saying we wouldn’t get our hair mussed, but I do say no more than ten to twenty million killed, tops, that is, depending on the breaks.”
Google maps and earth shows the building from the ground up. No secrets here.
LOL!!!
The rumoured miles of underground tunnels at Offutt are a good story. Where the mountains of excavated dirt wound up is the question.
Ah, but that depends on if less is more... more or less.
Gee in 1990-1991 I was in an F-14 Squadron at NAS Miramar, San Diego CA(not on a DD anywhere). In 2003 I was at USSTRATCOM Offutt AFB, NE. So I “missed” BOTH Iraq Festivities. :-) O and by the way there are NO mountains at Offutt, they are in Colorado Springs.
I grew up an hour north of Omaha.
Remember B52 flying over head. One great memory as a kid was a C5 flying so low in our “valley” that I looked up and saw the tail number right outside my bedroom window.
Had friends whose parents worked at Offut in the SAC days. One of their Dad’s told me that if war was declared “Go outside and watch the show, you are to close to survive”.
Honestly, good times. I loved the old SAC museum that was on the old base grounds. The new one in Ashland is nice, but there is something about sitting in an old hanger listening to old missile men tell stories.
Hey! Trump is assembling a “war cabinet” so he can destroy the world!
We have to be prepared and understand all these things you know!
It has been there for a long time Offut and Omaha used to be the most targeted place on Earth.
Of course, in the good old days, we had things to stop the shots.
Of course we need to be prepared. But let us hope and pray that it doesn’t come to that, for there would be no winners and the consequences would be unimaginable.
Giving aid and comfort to the enemy?
I didn’t get the impression that the film was in the new mission command center. Still about 24 months to go I imagine.
Really good, thanks. I always feel better about our country when I get to see people like this in action, doing a tough job with utmost professionalism and dedication. Even when it has to come through the lens of CNN ;-)
On a very small scale related experience, I’d organized a tour group of the Minuteman training facility at F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne back in the 70s and while we were in the LCC simulator they received a test EAN and when the lights started flashing and klaxons blaring it was very easy to forget “this is just a test”. These drills happened at random times even for the training facility because that’s how they work in the actual job, and it was impressive to watch. Fortunately since THEY knew it was a drill we were allowed to stay and observe instead of getting the boot.
24 months....MAYBE....36 Months....MAYBE. MAYBE Who Really Knows!
The Boeing E-4 Advanced Airborne Command Post, with the project name "Nightwatch",[2] is a strategic command and control military aircraft operated by the United States Air Force (USAF). The E-4 series was specially modified from the Boeing 747-200B for the National Emergency Airborne Command Post (NEACP) program. The E-4 serves as a survivable mobile command post for the National Command Authority, namely the President of the United States, the Secretary of Defense, and successors. The four E-4Bs are operated by the 1st Airborne Command and Control Squadron of the 595th Command and Control Group located at Offutt Air Force Base, near Omaha, Nebraska. An E-4B when in action is denoted a "National Airborne Operations Center".
HEY! I'm here! LOL
