The Maryland high school student who fatally shot his ex-girlfriend and injured another student also killed himself, authorities said.
Austin Rollins, 17, shot himself in the head when he was confronted by school resource officer Blaine Gaskill during the March 20 school shooting, the St. Marys County Sheriffs Office said Monday.
Gaskill had arrived within a minute of Rollins shooting 16-year-old Jaelynn Willey in a hallway at Great Mills High School. A shot Gaskill fired struck the Glock handgun in Rollins hand.
Rollins held the gun, which Gaskill had ordered him to drop, to his head, student witnesses told WJLA.
Gaskill was not injured.
The teen girl was left brain-dead and taken off life support two days after the attack.
Desmond Barnes, a 14-year-old victim, was shot in his right thigh in the same hallway as Willey.
I was just shot at my school, he said in a 911 call released Monday, where he had to repeat himself to the dispatcher, saying again, I was just shot at my school.
Investigators said the single shot fired by Rollins hit both Willey and Barnes.

I thought the media already forgot about this story. They’re really trying to downplay what went on here, it could have been a lot worse.
The armed good guy ended the threat, using the perp’s own hands.
Win-win. The good guy didn’t have to kill and the bad guy doesn’t breathe any more.
Great bank shot officer.
The good guy’s presence and use of the gun stopped the attack from escalating.
Period.
Full stop.
End of story.
The word is semantics.

LOL!
The Cartwrights did this all the time on Bonanza...
which is why I immediately posted a reply to myself mocking my spelling, or lack of checking!
It is irrelevant that the good guy did not shoot the criminal. What is relevant is since he was armed, he forced a quick end to the attack.
JoMa
Exactly.
Used to happen all the time in Westerns. The good guy with the white hat disarms the bad guy in the black hat that way, or just shoots him in the arm.
Stupid. The confrontation by the brave armed man ended the attack.
Did Blaine Gaskill stop the attack?
I think so.
Actually, not too difficult. We had a couple of people shot in the hands in Iraq, and head behind the hands...the gun naturally draws the attention, hands and head shots occur.
bkmk
Absolutely. More often than not when confronted these mass shooters will kill themselves when confronted by a good guy with a gun.
Let’s endorse more good guys with a gun...
Most mass shootings end this way. The point is that how much more would have happened if the guy showed up and asked him pretty please to stop?
The kid saw the cop and ended it.
I am fine with that. In fact its betterthis way the cop doesnt get the guilt.
Not at all. Bullets do strange things once they hit something.
That wonderful, poor girl was hit in her head. With the curvature of the skull the bullet probably glanced off the back and thus angled downward as it exited.
I once shot a whitetail deer at 102 paces while she was standing broadside to me. The bullet went through her heart and hit the ribs on the opposite side, turned 90 degrees and traveled down through four ribs then angled up to her spine, where it then traveled down the spine and then hit the pelvic bone where it then exited straight up and out through the top of her body. I used a 30-06 with a 180 grain flat base soft point. Hand load with about 54 grains of IMR4350 (if memory serves).
A pistol round does not have as much power as a rifle but at close range the bullet will go through a person, even if it hits bone, and especially if it was a Full Metal Jacket.
I live in the DC area and have watched some of the local news. The shooter and the officer fired almost at the same time, so as the killer pulled the trigger and offed himself the officers bullet hit him. If the killer put the handgun in his mouth then, if he had not, the officer's shot would have hit him in the neck or jaw. That would have stopped him for sure.
If the kid put the weapon to the side of his head and pulled the trigger then the officer's shot probably was a miss, but we may never know the full details.
“(who, by the way, offered the bad guy a chance to live)”
Their was a mall shooting near us years ago and a citizen armed good guy confronted the shooter - also gave him the opportunity. Good guy got shot and paralyzed. BUT - the bad guy then did flee into a storage room and was later caught. So the armed good guy again - stopped the shooter.
